the fa-18s will definitely be 'aging' by then.

I'n the meantime , does anyone know where the F-111s are buried?

We might need to dig them up.
There is one in Pt Adelaide and another in SA not sure where. There's a website dedicated to each unit, where lost and if still existing where it is.

    They should still be flying.

    They could be.

Somewhere previously I wrote a thread or a post on the rebirth capablity of this fabulous aircraft.

But it came down to new toys for the new boys.

At the time just about the whole of the ADF had gone through a complete transformation of top brass and the old bastards were gone....it was open slather for the new brass and the government.

Oh well, in retrospect lots of people are happy they have gone.
Don't know much about the technical stuff, I just heard that they were past their use by date, and that the cost of keeping them in the air was horrendous.
Only seen one flying once, and that was when Karen was doing Free Fall Parachute Jumping at Violet Town which is not far from the Puckapunyal Army base, where there was a big "Exercise" on this particular weekend, involving, amongst other things, the RAAF & their F111s.
Anyway, they must've got word of what was going on at Violet Town, 'cause one of these F111s came over & gave the drop zone a REALLY good look. The pilot had his flaps down, circling us, I reckon He'd have been no more than 150m above the ground, & so close we could clearly see the Pilot & his Raybans (don't know whether they were Raybans of course!),...a real cowboy,...anyway, after his look, he was "gone",....very quickly,......and with a lot of noise!

The new fighter we buy wont have the intercept range that the F-IIIs had.

As the original post showed , if they want to they will be able to get close enough, and they will still be out of intercept range.

Thats in 6 yrs time though.

    It's really a bit of a laugh.

When I was at school we went to Amberley to have a look at the F111, I thought they were the coolest thing.
It must have been when we first got them because I remember seeing Mirages & a Canberra I think at the same time.
    They just looked Mean.

There is still a Canberra down the road from Amberley on the corner opposite the Motel just a couple of clicks before Champions Way which is the road that leads down to Queensland Raceway and Willowbank Dragway. Unfortunately the poor old thing is stuck up in the air on a pole and it's definitely worse off for being out in the weather for all those years. Shame really.
    Cheers,
    Terry
