    Dog lovers - help!

A big reason I drive my Defender is the freedom it provides... A night on the beach with that special lady or some friends, camping next to a salt lake with no one for miles around, or making new discoveries out on the Nullabor plain. And my dog, Gus, has been on most of these trips with me.
It's getting harder and harder to find good outback 4WD destinations that allow dogs.
Now my local council wants to stop dog owners letting their dogs off leash at a number of popular local reserves near where I live in Perth. We've set up a group to fight the changes - Poochpower - and we've done our homework. The bans are totally unfounded.
If you live in WA, especially the City of Stirling, and like to see dogs running off the leash, check out our Facebook page and please lend your support. Cheers, Dan

The laws about dogs being on leashes are much bigger than just local council. You do have to keep your dog under control at all times, even in the confines of your own property to an extent. You cannot even sit out in the front yard or verge if it is open with your dog off its leash. Getting to the point of being silly.
Having said that most people seem to ignore the dog on leash signs etc.
I think it comes down more to owner accountability. These rules are in place as there are some real numptys around.
Case 1: Cricket / Football ovals. Frequently dispsticks turn up with their dogs when junior sport is being played and still insist on letting their dogs of leashes to run around. Often interfering with games and practice. I told my boy to try and hit the cricket ball at the owners not the dogs. It is a sport oval not a dog oval.
Case 2: on whitehills beach. Plenty of space clowns have to pull up right alongside, we put our dog on a lead as coutesy. They let out 2 dogs that start antagonising my dog and nipping at it, so bugger them and quite clearly indicate let my dog off so she can defend herself.
I fully agree with being able to let your dog off its lead but there also has to be some common sense as well and unfortunately every third dog owner seems to have very little of this.
And yes our dog comes everywhere with us and often stops us going to particular areas.

    Good perspective on this Craig.

Dan while you may find it 'unfair', second to cigarette butts on our local beach, dog poo left for kids to step in is our 'pet' hate.

Just like inconsiderate smokers don't help their enduring right to smoke in public places, those dog owners that bring two or more dogs to the beach and let them go wild sniffing and licking kids or not picking up their crap, create an opposition to your stated aim.

I'm not implying you are in the irresponsible owner group, just that a lot of negativity toward dogs in public places is there for a reason.

Crap left on footpaths is an increasing sight where I live, I hear France has a huge problem with dog poo on footpaths.

I love dogs and have one.
I walk it always under leash and also carry poo bags to collect them regardless if I am in a footpath or in the bush.
I only have my dog free if allowed places.

The biggest problem with France is that it is full of French.

OK, not all dog owners do the right thing. Not all 4WD-ers do either. But do we ban the lot because of a small minority??!
If we don't stick up for the freedoms many take for granted, they'll get eroded one by one. Whoops, they already are...
Incidentally, dogs on leash poo, too!
Enjoy France, Steve. Check out all the dogs in restaurants, on buses and just about everywhere.

Haven't owned a dog for years now but see many owners who have absolutely no control over their furry friends when we're out driving or walking.
We quite often find poo bags in the alleyway beside our place, just chucked down when no one is watching them, ignorant sods.
Quite honestly as others have said, they bring more regulation on themselves through their thoughtless actions.
Fag smokers and kid/dog owners are generally the most ignorant lot around....apart from cyclists that is.
