WORKSHOP Project 1, put your ideas in.

OK folks, if you have been following the threads 4WD Monthly - Luxury 4WD of the Year and I suggested running a workshop and was put in to set it up by Incisor.

Well I have just looked at the great job sclarke has done on the draws and sleeping area project and it has got me thinking in overdrive.

Here’s where I'm coming from, I am a rail fanatic and as such go all over the place to photograph and video trains and trams.

The last trip I did, I removed the rear seats out of the Rangie and away I went.

I quickly found some draw backs. At night I would load all the camera gear and my bags on the front seats and blow up the air bed in the back.
Next morning, down went the air bed and all the bags and gear were put in the back again.

This is just to much of a hassle and the other major problem is that all the camera gear ends up beiing visible for all to see.

The only rear draw systems that I have seen to date were much higher than sclarke’s set up with no where to put a bed, so his is a great idea and will be very handy for me.

Now my question is how many others might interested in doing a similar set up.

I am definitely going to do it and intend to go and get some of the material in the next day or two.

Thanks to the great pics that sclarke has posted, my job of designing is already under way.

So come on, if your interested, post your views and ideas.

    Cheers.

don't know if this is any help. Not quite sure what you are after. But.
i"m looking to put in pipe bunks in my landy S3. yacht style fold up with rope netting to sleep on. In summer when running the soft top i don't think a traditional hammok strung up from window frame to rear hoop could be beat. Drop down storage areas in the rear load tub are next on the list.

Owning a rangie i thought you would just stay at b&b's ?

oh yeah just re-read your original post:
the idea of doing tutorials like these is very good and think would interest a lot of forum members.

the tech section as good as it is, i do not think is the place for such stuff as after a few days it will be quite a few pages back. The example of the roof lining should be a sticky in a dedicated tutorial section imho. its stuff you would not normally think about but when you see it, it gets you thinking and opens your eyes to other unknown options. Its a lot of work putting a tutiriol together to have it lost in the tech forum back pages after a few days. I am working on a disk brake conversion for series vehicals and will put my hand up to do a tute' but only if it's in its own tutiriol section.

Hi crossy, I do some times but as I posted, I chase trains and that means being in places that are to far away from a b&b to be useful or convenient and after seeing to great job that sclarle is doing, I can’t wait for daylight to start on mine but I will have to come up with a few ideas to fit it in the Rangie so it can be removed when not in use and so there are no visible signs once it is removed.

I guess it comes down the needs you have.
everyone is different, My Disco design was larger and it worked great.
This time i dont have that need so i'm making it a sleeping area.

Work out what you need and then build it, you will change your mind several times over the course of the project.

Good luck and if you need idea's......... Ask..

I think Crossy's right about the forum,,
it would just end up lost in the back pages,,

will we need to run these tutorials past a (if not done by a-) tech person first?
to be sure, to be sure.

I reckon this is a fantastic idea.

It would be good to run any tutorials by a qualified tech but lets face it...who would be willing to read, edit and re-post all the tutorials we could come out with?

Besides if your modifying your vehicle yourself and your not an engineer then the work may not pass the grade anyway.

But who cares as long as it's a reasonable job and you did it yourself. It's the satisfaction of doing it yourself isn't it. If your unsure of the quality of your work then you take it to someone who knows more than you do dont ya?

I like the idea of a list of tutorials, even just to get ideas.

    Once again, great idea.

    Lets see it happen.

It looks as if a tutorial section of some sort is definitely a go-er. Drivesafe (top bloke that he is) "volunteered" to moderate it.

Crossy please feel free to do said Disc brake conversion tute, even if in the tech section (if new section not yet set up) as the thread can EASILY be moved from one forum to the other by one of the omnipotent mods (Incisor).

Ron - perhaps you could do the spell-checking on the tutorial forum to lend it that extra edge of professionalism

Hey, don’t blame me, I was just backing crossy’s idea and thats all.

No, not true, if there is enough interest and Incisor can help set it up, I will be happy to help in any way possible.

As for the Project 1, I have already started taking some of sclarke’s ideas and getting some measurements on storage containers with wheels on so I can design my own storage system.
My problem is that mine will be out of the Rangie more times than not so I will be coming at the design a bit differently than sclarke's design but I’m going to be basing mine on his ideas.

Why reinvent the wheel when someone else has already been there and done that.

    Cheers.

    Drivesafe... you are the man....

    Hey removeable type.

OK has to be light and modular. or else it will take 2 of you to lift it out.

Mind you a range with a small false floor would work, then you could build it up. that way the false floor would work to hide the everyday stuff, Tools ect.

If you want idea's let me know.

I built the Disco one around Milk crates as you never run out of milk crates, if one gets damaged then you just find another.

Universal is the Go if you want simplicity.
The Defender one i'll build a Drawer for the rear and the rest is throw it under the panels.

I'll take pix when it is loaded for the High country.

Hi sclarke, as I posted earlier, I had seen over storage draw systems and they were all about a metre high and were just storage.

When I saw yours, all my travel plans changed big heaps.

My problem is that most of the time I will not have this set up in the Rangie so I have been working out ways to make it, as you have, as modules, so I can install it and remove it as needed.

I’ve already got some ideas and have done so investigating.

Now as this is going to be the first of, I hope many projects, I think it’s time to move the rest of the to the new Projects and Tutorials Section.
And then I can moderate it. ( have absolutely know idea what this will entail but what the heck )

Now before moving to the other section, we need to come up with a funky name for the project. Draw and Sleeping Area just won’t do, so if you have any ideas for a name, go for it.

    Cheers, drivesafe.

PS Suggestions for any other projects will be gratefully accepted.
