Registration / Number Plates

Another 'interesting' one ...

A business associate and mate has a big delivery van a couple of years old.

Gets pulled over via number plate recognition, unreg.

Has rego papers with receipt number handy, nup, unreg. $900 ish fine, can't continue his delivery run until he gets a temporary reg, dunno what that cost.

Calls Vicroads and after a bit of verbal discourse, yes he paid by internet or Bpay but must have typed in a wrong digit or something. AFAIK the amount was debited from his account at the time.

No reminder notice in Vic. According to the person from Vicroads he spoke to it is becoming a relatively common prob.

Yep. I would never carry any paperwork, rego or otherwise, in the car for exactly that reason. ;)

I got stopped by a mojocycle cop in the city last year in my work ute,he tells me the numberplate belongs to a different vehicle.Told him he was wrong as I know what vehicle had the plate before.Told him it was a red toyota hilux 2wd registered to the Shire of Williams.
He confirmed this,I was told to get it sorted asap.
On checking at the office which is also a rego licensing agent the official government records did show the red hilux,BUT,reciepts from licencing showed my work ute since it was purchased new in 2006.

One of my criticisms with the system of rego fees , is there compounded . Now I now we have to pay for our roads and bridges , plus all the other infrastructure ,The problem is It's starting to become unfordable for lots of lower paid people . So if they get caught without rego , then hit with a big fine , that just makes things worse . I can't see how rego can keep rising ahead wages . There has to be a balance , at the moment I can't see that !!.. Jim

I was stopped at a random breath testing station. Copper says "Park in front of the police car." I did. After a while (I nearly drove off they took so much time) a copper came over and asked me "Do you have a reason for driving an unregistered vehicle?"
"I'm not driving an unregistered vehicle." I replied.
He then invited me to view the registration details on the computer in the police car. He thought information on the computer constituted proof. I pointed out the database on the computer might not be up to date as I had recently paid the registration (and, yes, the label was fixed to the car). He told me "Computers don't get it wrong."
As soon as I heard that I knew I was dealing with a dickhead.
"Just give me the fine." I said. But, no, he insisted on giving me a lecture on how dangerous it was to drive an unregistered vehicle. Fell in one deaf ear, though.
At the end of the lecture, he gave me the fine. I said "I'll see you in court."
"That's your choice." he said wanting the last word.
At my earliest opportunity I rang Vicroads. As it turns out, my vehicle was showing as unregistered on the Vicroads computer as well. When I asked why as my registration had been paid they told me my vehicle was in fact registered bus, due to under staffing, the registration processing was running six to eight weeks late and the police computers were about ten weeks out of date.
I bought an official Vicroads receipt and sent that off with a copy of the fine to Senior Sergeant Ritchie at the Traffic infringements Office wit a letter stating "See you in court." He replied with a letter simply stating "We will not be pursuing this matter any further."

If you pay on-line, don't you get an immediate emailed receipt (with receipt no. which we have to write onto our rego papers) like we do in NSW?

Why are you removing number plates from unregistered vehicles?

This probably won't be the most popular AULRO post ever (and it essentially covers two threads) but I am confused about how people can complain about the "nanny state" not trusting people to use their judgment when tying down their loads properly with a rope yet are up in arms when the same "nanny state" won't give them a little sticker to remind them when to pay their rego.

Seriously, if you can't handle the responsibility of remembering when your rego is due (despite the letters the RMS/whoever and your insurers send you) then I don't think I'd trust your judgement and ability to tie a knot either.

I pay by cheque at the post office. One is not required to carry registration papers and proof of registration in the car.

Here in Victoria, it is a requirement to hand in plates when de-registering a vehicle which I have done, however, I was referring to driving an unregistered vehicle, without plates, on an unregistered vehicle permit.
In fact, the correct way to drive a vehicle on a UVP is to remove the plates, otherwise, a pedantic copper will charge you with driving an unregistered vehicle if you leave the plates on.
