    The cost of fines

G'day all , I was wondering if any of you legal beagles , would know what is the minimum cost of any fine , not just here in Victoria but any state . I was once fined $50 for not displaying my rego sticker , It had curled off the screen and gone hard . I payed the fine , then some time later Vic roads said that they had had some problems with them pealing off . How ironic now they don't even issue them . So today's minimum ? Cheers Jim .

Everything in SA carries a $60 victims of crime levy on top, even the lowest fine which I believe is $15. therefore $75

Doesn't it get back to 'penalty units' which is periodically increased due to inflation etc?
I thought 1 penalty unit was about 100 bucks.
Is this fines that are issued through a court rather than through police for small offences?

...which raises the question, how do victims of crime apply to get compensation back from the proceeds of such levy? (or is it just another tax )

all fines issued by SAPOL have the $60 VOC levy including parking etc etc
local council parking fines have no VOC component..

all court cases found guilty should carry a $150 (i think) VOC levy but they usually wave it!!

On a closer look here,, it paints an interesting picture: $1.6Bn spent for victim compensation, only $57.4M recovered.

This link by a sydney law firm explains that fare evasion and parking offenses are exempt from the levy (in NSW at least).

As for penalty units (to bring this back to the OP question), the rates etc are outlined in section 17 of this act:
    CRIMES (SENTENCING PROCEDURE) ACT 1999

"Unless the contrary intention appears, a reference in any Act or statutory rule to a number of penalty units (whether fractional or whole) is taken to be a reference to an amount of money equal to the amount obtained by multiplying $110 by that number of penalty units."

... so I guess you could get fined 0.5 penalty units (~$55 in todays money) if it's documented as such.

Parking within 10m of an intersection without traffic lights is a $242 fine by a local council in Sydney. So must be 2 penalty units + GST.
