I came across three very likeable young fellows in an overheated, early model Grand Cherokee. After the good humoured "He bought a Jeep" and "Should've got a Land Rover " etc., one of them took the wind right out of my sail with "I only paid $350 for it." Looked pretty tidy too.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

I have several Toyota-driving friends who find sport in criticizing anything that isn't a Toyota. When you call them on it they say "it's just a bit of fun, don't take it seriously". Having other people dis my ride isn't fun for me and gets very old very quickly. I generally make a point of not doing the same. I have a "I'd rather be pushing my Land Rover than driving a Toyota" sticker in a drawer at home. I haven't put it on the Defender because I don't want to join the brand wars.
I know just what you mean! I get it countless times from the guys at work each and every frigging week. And boy it gets old quickly. I really hate the Holden/Ford, Toyota/Nissan thing. And I just wish it was only Landrover/Jeep. But it seems there's also the group within the group with the Discovery/Defender thing. And before anyone says that's a lie I've had a couple of people say how rubbish my Defender is and how much better the Disco is. Doesn't leak. Quiet. Oh...and it's JUST as good off road.
I'll give every body the hot tip.......we bloody knew all this before we bought it. And we bought it anyway!
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. No car I have ever owned has had so many people come over and just want to ask me or chat to me about my car like my Defender.
And the biggest saving grace, I have never met a nicer group of friendly, genuine people like Land Rover people. mostly.
Sorry.....rant over. You hit a nerve lol.
In the last 16yrs I went from a DC Hilux, to a Smart Fortwo, to my current DC Defender.
Both the fortwo and Defender do attract a lot of admiring approving attention:
- hot women (fortwo)
- balding overweight lorry drivers, and other defender drivers (defender)
Epiphany!: Now I understand a matter that has confused me for some time. My wife said she really likes the look of the defender, her admiration/lust was a partial influencer to buy. Obviously she had figured out in advance what I only observed after several months driving... The shift away from hot women admirers...
Defenders certainly get some special looks around Sydney. We've been at Mona Vale this week and there are Discos and Range Rover Sports everywhere, but it's the Defenders which stand out from the crowd.
