Clue for picture number 1,
It's early 1942, the lady and her son along with their husband/father (not in picture) had recently arrived in Australia from a small island in the Western Pacific.

Right on the money Chris.
Dimond Gorge on the Fitzroy River in what is now the Mornington Wilderness Reserve was once proposed as the site for a dam.

For picture no 1. another clue.
The lady is Mrs Jean MacArthur and her son Arthur. The wife and child of General Douglas MacArthur and was taken shortly after their arrival in Australia from the island of Corregidor, the last bastion of American troops in the Philippines which surrendered to the Japanese in early 1942.
This picture was taken at a popular Brisbane tourist spot where their picture still hangs. My father and the other Australian soldier were their 'escorts', along with her American aide, on the day.
Any guesses ?.
Deano :)
Mt Coot-tha for the location of the historic photo?
