Not the ones with push button start. While you can press the button without your foot on the brake and the engine doesn't start, it is not a true accessories position because the engine management and other management systems are still active.

The last thing you'd want to do with these vehicles is to deactivate the vehicle systems which automatically locks the steering.

Clearly not a push button start system if this is possible -

After years of inaction related to the problem, GM recalled roughly 2.4 million vehicles last year which potentially contained defective ignition switches that easily slipped from the "run" to "accessory" position. Such a sequence turned off critical electrical functions that, among other things, provided power to airbag systems.

The Golf just stops. Not related to the gearbox and no faults thrown. The death in Melbourne wasn't gearbox related.

It's not limited to fly by wire systems. When I was learning to drive my dad's old XR chook bucket (auto box) in the back yard, maybe 40yrs ago(?), the return spring on the throttle at the carby let go. Loud pedal to the floor. Trans kicked down and car launched! I had the presence of mind at 15yo to turn off the ignition. Stopped before hitting the back fence.

Can't turn off at the key in gear? "N" is surely the answer.

In modern electronic controlled gearboxes maybe nothing much would happen (system clever to not actually engage reverse).

In 40yo auto rwd vehicles - tossing it in reverse at speed CAN result in:
- a loud bang,
- rear wheels locking up at least momentarily,
- violent moments of loss of control,
- sounds of glass breaking, shrieking metal,
- rapid departure from your marked lane
(Been there, done that)
