I'd suggest changing the plugs at the same time that you're doing the belts.

IIRC... Some of the earlier diesel engines were actually only fitted with 3x glow plugs anyway.

Bugger, mines getting hard to start as it gets colder , I was just thinking the other day, this has to be easier to do than VW transporter but after that comment

As you would be aware the term Tdi is the generic name given to the Series 1 Disco Diesels (the sticker on the back door), TD5 for the Series 2 etc - The first Freelander diesel (L series) Designator was Di - I assume meaning diesel injected - the later Freelander BMW diesel lost the Di designator and became the TD4 in line with the TD5 designator for the series 2 disco and the TD6 designator for the RR. I think the diesel version of the Series 3 Disco is called the TDV6 rather than the TD6 designator of the RR.

I believe the Tdi 200/300 series Diesels are Overhead Valve engines with a timing belt rather direct drive or timing chain driving a camshaft which operate the push rods. The Freelander engine is electronic, single overhead cam but unusually driving a 4 valve head from the one camshaft - the TD4 is more advanced with timing chains rather than belts and has twin cams driving a 4 valve head - this engine is a bit unusual in that the cam shaft chain only drives one of the cams from the crankshaft and there is a second chain driving the second camshaft from the first.

So in summary - Freelander Diesels are Di or TD4 - Disco Tdi, Td5 or TDV6

Hi garry, i was actually reading an article at Zooks place on saturday while doing my wheel bearings. BMW along with other car maker ties had planned a series of engines, the TD4, TD5 and TD6, each of these engines increased in capacity by 500ml with each additional cylinder. This was the start of the TD engine range and BMW had big plans for this engine, it easily met pollution standards without the need for extra filtering throught the exhaust, even though it had this. The TD engine range was created with future refinements planned. Ford however stuffed this up when they took over, Ford, not wanting to use engines from brands they dont own, soon put a stop to the TD range, the TD4 will go when the freelander is upgraded (presumably), the TD5 has been replaced with the TDV6, which is a Jag Diesel engine, and the TD6 will remain in the Rangie till next year when it is replaced by a small capacity (4.0L, or maybe less) V8 Diesel engine, i think from ford. This article went on to say that it was very disapointing to see such a remarkable engine get scrapped. Ok, thats my history lesson for the day. Matt

Matt - sorry I don't know how to quotes - I stuff it up every time I try - I would quote your V8 diesel comment - do you reckon the RR will go for a V8 diesel or the TDV6 but with the second turbo as the Jaguars have - I believe its good for another 30 - 40 kw I believe. Suppose the V8 would be better off road but them how many new RR get of the bitumen!!

Its academic for me as I can only dream and drool at the thought of either!!

Nope, definitely the V8, overlander just tested the updated rangie and the RR Sport, and reports from land rover are that it will definitely be a v8, only a small capacity. They dont want to use the TDV6 becuase they reckon it blurs the line between the D3 and the RR. By using the V8 in the top model line, they keep the RR a step above the D3, the TD6 is getting the arse cause its a BMW engine, Ford are slowly getting rid of all BMW ties, which in most cases is mainly engines. Hey Camel,

I see you say the Freelander DI motor is a Perkins motor, so was this a development of the Montego motor? - also build by Perkins.

    Hey Ace,

The TDV6 motor is actually a Ford / Peugeot development that just happend to end up in a Jag initially. Ford and Peugeot has worked jointly on diesel motors in Europe for years - there was even a Ford Granada (same as Ford Falcon) with a 2.1 Pug motor in it in the early 80's

I owned a 1986 Ford Escort with a Pug derived 1.6 4 cylinder diesel motor for years - bloody great car for it time
