What strange things did you have to do in your line of work?

Cutting an unexploded bomb out of our prawn nets would have to be up there.


Fished a couple of dead bodies out of the water. Not a pleasant thing to do


the worst which wasn't that bad was speaking to Navy doctor an a HF radio trying to diagnose 1 of my crew whom had a case of a sexually transmitted disease, then having to describe the symptoms. What made it worse was we had to track down the other party which happened to be wife of another boats skipper.... Was not a very pleasant conversation. I can only say I made sure we stayed well away from that other boat for a very long time.


believe me if he had a choice between taking on the husband or the 1800 pound bull I think I know which one he would have chosen.

Also, walked the sewage in-fall tunnel into Bondi STP.

Stood, swum in the inflow. Winched the rag monster off the flow diverter.

Stood amazed how at 2300 the flow just drops as people **** and shower less, and how at 0500 it starts to rise as Sydney does.

Sat in zero visibility working away over a hundred metres down, yet can barely stand to waterski in the Hawkesbury because you can't see the bottom/the water is just brown.

My usuals experiences

I was a lifeboat man in the UK voulnteering for the RNLI (Uk version of Coastguard) based on the river Thames in London. Ive pulled a few dead bodies,animals out of the river and saved a few too including their boats....:D

The worst thing I have ever had to do ,although not work related, was coming across a vehicle accident. I tried to revive the young lady driving after she stopped breathing. Mouth to mouth and chest compressions. Did this until the paramedic chopper flew in. Problem was she had died before I started. Broken neck from whiplash.

I worked as a chainman for a surveyor doing base plans for parks around the harbour. Between shots he would swing the theodolite around and check all the unit block windows. If I saw his arm waving wildly I knew he had spotted something interesting.

It never failed to amaze me why people did not close a blind or window before engaging in "that sort of behaviour":angel:

I've been to quite a few road accidents, including bus crashes. One I remember the most was when a small boat came off a trailer and went through the windscreen of an oncoming vehicle. Not pretty.

Just recently I was at a rock crushing/recycling plant. The foreman was showing me the rollers in the crusher which require lots of grease as they operate at very high temps. He explained that I should keep my hands clear.... he then promptly got the bottom corner of his Hi-Viz vest tangled in them! For some unknown reason, he had been able to remove the cover without stopping the crusher. Luckily the cloth quality wasn't too good, it tore the thing off him before he could hit the emergency stop. Could have been very nasty indeed.

Um yeah.... kept my fingies well clear!

I'm told that the 'safety lapse' has now been addressed thank God!

Not a glass dildo (which I have also made quite a few of) but a small thin walled glass tube with a magnified/lensed end on it and a small metal ferrul on the opposite end, which is used on a small hand held microscope and inserted into the baby chickens vent to determine sex.

Hardly even used these days I hear but we used to still supply the tubes up until 15 years ago or so.
