Well, They've established that the Torque Converter overheated.... so much so that it changed colour!
The mob who built the converter have been unable to ascertain a reason for this... in other words, they're not accepting responsibility for the failure.
The Shep man called me (that's rare in itself) and told me that he is now trying to source another "Core" from which they will rebuild another transmission. The reason being given is that they are unable to ascertain the reason that this unit keeps failing.... in other words, it's a lemon.
Anyway, under the terms of the warranty, I am unable to enforce having someone else do the rebuild so I have to live with these numpty's doing the rebuild again:(. This is advice I got from Consumer Affairs in which they told me that unless the company renegs on their obligations under their warranty, I am unlikely to succeed in any action 'at this stage'.
They did advise however that I will have a claim under 'competence' if the unit should fail again.
So there you go...... I have no choice other than to allow these morons to rebuild my transmission for the third time!
I MAY get my car back on the road in about 10 days......
I have to compliment Impact Transmission in Croydon. Graeme has been fantastic in his dealings with me, even providing me with a loan vehicle for the duration. He will be refitting the box when it's rebuilt and has promised me a very thorough testing prior to me getting it back.

Assuming that the warranty restarts with each rebuild, this trannie will never be out of warranty.

Well, he told me that they can't find any reason for the breakdown. No sticking valves (how they'd really know that with everything so badly burnt I have no idea), nothing that they can find. They have tried to get a 'core' but can't source one anywhere in Aus at the moment.
End result, he's ordering a completely reco'd box from A & B transmissions who are an approved ZF rebuilder in Dandenong. They should have the box delivered to Croydon (Impact Automatics) by Friday, but at the latest Monday he says. Graeme will refit the box as soon as he can.
The really good news is, A & B will provide a new 2 year/50k warranty which has nothing to do with Numpty in Shepparton.
Fingers are well and truly crossed at this stage.
In a past life I had a gearbox repair shop. It was actually called "Gear Box Reconditioners PL".
This was located in East Malvern. At the time A&B used to be around the corner in Murrumbeena.
There was another place nearby in Caulfield called Applied Automatics.
We used to get them to do a lot of our run of the mill autos, but when it came to a RR the auto always went to A&B. Never had any problems.
At the time and it was 1999 when I sold this business, they were one of not many, possibly the only one, that could bench test an auto after a rebuild.
I would recoment this mob in a flash.
Thanks Dave, that really is good to hear. I know that AMV always use these guys for any auto work as well.
Can I suggest a complete replacement of the oil lines and oil cooler with new components before the reconditioned box is coupled up.
The old components could be harbouring a load of metal chaff.
