Just give it back as good as you get, like ask a Jeep owner about how many recalls his cheripoo has had or how many tilt tray trips its been on.
I notice it on the rd a lot , an old disco cant possibly be in front of me so i must try to race him mentality.

This has been going on for so long, when the S11a was released and the Tojo came along, shortly followed by the Patrol, the Tojo and patrol both in 3 speed with atrocious suspension the arguments around the bbq started.
I was in Darwin then and everyone used to 'live' under their house , the yarns were only ever about Land Rover v Toyota v Patrol.....the size of barramundi you caught last w/e.....the size of the crocodile you saw on the Mary......and whether your marinated buffalo was hotter than the stuff your mate cooked.
Nothings changed has it?

I bought my d2 because i wanted something different and now i wouldn't have anything else. The guys that i do go 4wding with don't say anything about it even though one of their dads had a love/hate relationship with a RRC. Theirs are lifted and mine isn't and goes where ever they go. Most my mates like it.
I do know a guy who is a patrol nut and claimed that discoverys are horrible to drive and weren't as comfy as his old GQ. I don't go driving with him.

Not mates, but work colleagues call me a ****** and sledge the Land Rover brand when I mentioned I was buying a Defender. Jealousy springs to mind. Doesn't bother me, I just tell them, "You wouldn't understand, and I wouldn't expect you to. It's a passion thing".
They usually huff as I walk off smiling. Speaking of Defenders, bloody hurry up and get on the boat over here will you!

Most people I know that know anything about cars are generally jealous and talk about how they used to drive them in the army or the reputation of the Defender.
The rest don't know anything about cars so don't say anything. I generally don't hang around with other 4wders as I'm not really into off-roading for the sake of it and prefer to use it to get to a fishing spot or see something on holiday.

I know Tracey gets the ****s driving her Defender sometimes,the reason being is she'll be on her way to the bank or running for the loo and someone will bail her up with 20 questions about it,I think a women driving such a vehicle,and driving it very well mind you gets peoples attention also.I never get into arguements about my vehicles,not ever,I just smile,could not be bothered with Baa Baa's. out of the dozen or so cars i've owned, the land rover has been the least reliable. more fun/comfortable but least reliable.

My Tdi has been the most dependable vehicle I've ever owned along with my VW Polo,nothing else has come close. Pat

Only time my LRs have left me in trouble - I caused it...
The D1 was so modified and uprated that it was a case of chasing the next point in the chain - bolster something, break something, repeat...
The D2 - Only a Kangaroo finally caused a problem
The family D3 - Not one isse
The D4 - (searches for wood) - Aside from a Dash creak (not a reliability issue) has been faultless...
The Defender - Perfect - And modified.. Only thing on that which let me (and GreyKnight) down was poor mechanical work the few times a "proper" mechanic worked on it....
Had plenty of adventures in reliability with Mitsubishis, Holdens, Fords, Mini, BMW etc over the years...

I've also had a GQ patrol TD42 and an 80 series 1HD-FT and both had more go wrong with them. The disco 300Tdi is better to drive than either of them were and it's got 100,000 more km's on the odo. I know when I had my Landcruiser, when things went wrong I convinced myself that I must have gotten a one-off lemon. Most people don't believe me when I tell them the mighty 1HD-FT was no quicker than the 300Tdi. They freak out when I tell them it dropped a collet causing an engine rebuild totalling $17000. I told my wife the major thing that could go wrong in the disco is probably the auto at this age and that it might cost $3000. But then I told her that's about the cost of a set of injectors for a Prado which are a common repair and she felt a lot better.
