They, if you don't change your useage habits, tend to run up the cost of your electricity bill quite substantially.

You buy your power at a set cents/kWHr based on the time of day ... Off-peak / Shoulder Rate / Peak Rate .... and of course, the "peak" rate is 2pm-8pm mon-fri ...

... by load/time shifting your use of large power useage appliances you can save a lot of money.

It has a third rate, that is how it differs. A smart meter will not be limited as to how many different rates or how often they apply.

Also the plan down the track is during very high demand times, eg, a very hot day when air conditioners are in heavy use, to either switch you off or offer you a very high rate for this time.

The other gripe is that we have to pay for them, even if we don't want it.

If something is being forced upon us, for the betterment of the power company, why should we be paying for it?

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Problems-No idea Evo! I have had one for years and my kids heads are not green or similar. Some people hate them but apart from the fact we have all being paying for them see no real reason to hate them myself. A mate who installed them told me many funny yarns about the some people!

    10pm-7am 7 days / week
    Off-Peak tariff - 0.11c/kWHr

    7am-2pm weekdays / 7am-10pm weekends
    Shoulder Rate tariff - 0.18c/kWHr

    2pm-8pm weekdays
    Peak Rate tariff - 0.50c/kWHr

.... so the 2-8 weekday rate is 2.5 to nearly 4 times more expensive !! ... and 2-8 on a weekday is when the majority of household power useage activity occurs.

If I run a 2kw clothes dryer in the 2-8 rate for 2Hrs it costs me $2.00 ... if I run it in the 10-2 rate it costs me $0.44c .... $0.72c in the shoulder rate.

We get slugged hard for using power 2-8 on a weekday ... so you avoid this time specifically and run whatever can be time shifted to a a cheaper rate/time. When we had our meters changed, I changed all lights to compact fluros, made everyone in the house avoid the 2-8pm timeslot where/when possible, and my next bill was $383 instead of the previous bills $680.

If you're prepared to "play the game" you can reduce your bill substantially. If not, you pay through the nose !!

If I came over as complaining about smart meters , I didn't mean too. My winge was the installation , I could have had a fire when it into meltdown . Something else I didn't mention was I have solar , The smart meter wasn't calibrated for solar . Ok not a big deal come and calibrate , that will be $160,00 plus $80,00 administration . I said It is supposed to be a smart meter , It's not that smart . What can you do , Smile and pay . That was a while ago and we are well over It all now , just move on . I do have a mate that was involed in negotiations to install all the smart meter in Vic. All I can say is the public were kept in the dark , " pun intended " !!.. Jim

Because of supply charges, discounts for paying on time and other charges/discounts, the only true way to work out you power cost is to divide your total amount paid by Kw used.

In my case this works out to be 18.5 cent per Kw

Kev. With all three different costings it would be interesting to see what your comes in at.

I nearly chocked on my Wheeties when I saw 50cent a Kw.

I just re-read your post. What happens between 8 pm and 10 pm week days
