    Hi Chris

I saw some rubber based snow/mud "chains at the 4 X 4 show for approx $350 set .
about MM thick on the sides and ideal for your application

will have a dig in the paper work at home tonight and see if i can find the distributer in Melbourne and a web side for you to have a look

    An update,

Roof Carrier systems tried their Rud-a-Matic hoop type diamond chains and there isn't a great deal of clearance. Compared to the ARB chains which are suitable for 4WD's the Ruds have a bit more clearance.

The guys are Roof Carrier Systems are going to do more research on what else is available from Rud and what LRA actual specify.

I had a look at some snow tyres while down there which might be good in slushy and muddy conditions. They aren't cheap and I wonder if I should bit the bullet and look at 17" rims with a set of Cooper AT tyres which are 245/70/17 and this would probably give me just a bit more clearance with the 4WD chains since the tyre is 10mm narrower and I get the benefit of a tyre suitable for off-roading.

The D3 in 'S' spec comes std with the 17" wheels. The TDV6 and petrol V6 have the same brake disc diameters and I think the same calipers so the 17" wheels should fit. If you have a V8 petrol then 18" are the smallest rim you can fit. The US only get 19" std and V8 petrols at the moment so they have only one tyre choice and it's the Goodyear MTR which is shown on the D3 G4 Challenge. They tyres aren't available in the USA and there is a bit of a push by forum members to pursade Tirerack to import them if they can get approved.

What a shocker. No self-respecting 4WD should be available with anything more than a 16-inch rim.

    Kai,

Thanks for the info. I've seen the sno claws on a US LR forum and there is one guy who bought them and has used them in the mud. If fact he is the one who went on the RRS adventure trip where you see all though nice pics of the RRS climbing rocks.

I'm not sure how they compare to using chains which is still my preference. I'm following some information I found on another LR forum where an Aussie with a D3 worked out a 17*8" CSA/Mullins Explorer RV with a 245/70/17 Cooper tyre will fit the D3. The CSA/Mullins wheel has a 48mm offset compared to the standard 53mm. If this is an offset outward then this wheel/tyre combination will effectively increase my clearance by 10mm and that should be enough to use the Konig 4WD chains.

    Chris
