I think he said it was to do with new stricter European emmission standards that are coming - The TD5 passes now - but won't pass the new rules when they arrive in Europe [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif[/img]
So they obviously need to have a plan now
Is that why you never see any land cruisers in europe? too dirty?
That info was hot off the press. Not even the LR dealers knew that much.
In about 3 years time my Defender will be up to around 120,000 and the lease will be finished, so going for one of these beauts will be good. 6-speed auto has to be better economy, quicker, quieter at speed...a worthwhile upgrade methinks plus all the other little things. And if the payload, space and suspension are kept the same that'd be great.
BTW I've now seen a coil D3, air D3 and Defender go over exactly the same articulation track and I can say the Defender definitely does it the easiest. Significantly greater travel.
Pretty much, Land Cruiers and patrols will need new engines soon to meet the stricter standards in Australia.Quote:

From what an article said in a magazine i was reading at zook the TD5 was built to easily meet the standards for a long time to come. My guess is ford wants to switch to one of their engine and not BMW based engines. Matt
The new Defender diesel motor will be a development of the current 2.2 Pug / Ford motor used in the Ford Modeo but taken ot to 2.7 litres.

Well polictically anyway, but they are heading down the wrong track hence we are getting out now.
One of the politicians here said on the radio "the future of the foreigners in Switzerland does not lie in this country, but in theirs" :roll:
Glad to see that they are still looking to keep the same basic style, that is one of the reasons why it is popular over here. The farmers, timber fellars etc, do not have to vacume the carpet and oil the leather seatsQuote:

Hoo bloody ray. The TD5 is agood engine but revised seating and air con, bloody marvellous. May have to wait and get a 130 after all.

the TD5 was never a BMW engine, it was solely developed by Land Rover before BMW bought them. They just didn't have the funds to put it into production till the Bavarians came along.

The article i read just said that under BMW's rein they had plans to develop 3 different motors, The TD4 (freelander), the TD5 (Disco and fender) and the TD6 (Rangie), these engines increased in capacity by 500ml with the addition of each piston. They didnt say in the article who designed and built the engine, just that BMW did it, so that would make sense. Thanks. Matt
