I hope nothing goes swimmingly a-la-Corey! He came over and was quite explicite in explaining some of the problem areas of the Cape. Actually we'll cross paths up there, he's heading up about 2 weeks after us.

I have to admit that owning a P38A is somewhat daunting when it comes to thinking of remote area trips.

Not the fuel consumption - it's the "what if something fails" - there are so many functions controlled by computers - even though the only time it has failed to get me home inn the past 4 years of ownership was after the 1.6mm thick torque converter drive plate shattered and took out the crank angle sensor recently.

Fear not Ron, I saw a perfectly happy P38A at Bamaga in 2003. Although it is your one we are talking about......

True Ron, the Disco2 is the same really. I just figure that electronics are the norm and in 85000km they have been reliable, so they should be for the next 3000km or however long the trip is.

Yeah, I know. Mine has 201,000 on the clock and the electronics have been very reliable. In fact, nothing significant has failed in the electronics dept. with the exception of the remote unlocking. It will remote lock but not unlock.

I've replaced one blend flap servo motor (controls the climate control temp) as it was becoming unreliable but I consider that to be a replaceable maintenance item. They are working all the time so they can be expected to wear out.

The air suspension is probably the most worrisome if one had a failure in the bush the car would be down on the bump stops. One could just fit coil springs, i suppose.

I don't know if you are being serious or not Damien.

I consider my car to have been pretty reliable - I know that the boys at KLR rubbish the P38A but you'll find I haven't spent much on repairs. The exception being the engine replacement owing to 4 slipped liners - I think the engine was already suffering from these when I bought it. I also think that it could have been avoided if the 3/4 blocked radiator had been replaced earlier.

When it comes down to it electronics are something we cant avoid, all those die hard cruiser and patrol fans will be eating humble pie when nissan and toyota finally catch up with the rest of the world, mind you going by history they have another 20 or 30 yrs to say low tech is best before they have no choice. All you can do is service your car and repair things when they become worn or broken, worrying about whether this or that will fail is silly, just drive it maintain it and worry about failures when they occur. They're all still full of electronics these days anyway. The LC100 DX and the 4.2TD GU are about the only things without electronics these days. These are still built for the luddites.
