Must some people be so ignorant.

Hi all, for those of you who havent read 4x4 Australia yet, there are two letters you should read, these authors, or in the second case the authors father need to read a bit more and find somethings out before they go about giving their opinion.

    Letter 1

Land Rover Discovery Weighs 2718kg and toyota prado is 2289kg. Dont you think the Discovery is going to have a heart attack long before the prado, especially as the Disco has a smaller engine than the prado?

The british made disco is suited to motor ways and short distances. Probably the furthest the brits drive off road in the old dart is the car park at the local rugby ground or a gravel driveway up to a big house where they park in readiness for a grouse shoot.

The discovery is a nice looking, innovative vehicle which might be ok for the rich, new car buyers who, work and play in paddington. But as a long term off road aqusition or second hand buy, cross it off your list.

The Ed's reply- It would be convenient if an engines performance and logevity could be based on its swept cylinder volume. But it cannot, as in this case; you have a proven, but less efficient 3.0L versus a brand new, hi tech and very efficient 2.7L.

    Letter 2

Just wondering if you can help me with any info on a Discovery TD5 Auto, mainly as my wife's 'shopping trolley' but also to tow our family's jayco campervan

My father reckons the Discovery wouldnt pull the skin off a pudding.

Any info you can give me would be great.

The ed just assured him it would do it easy as he had just done a trip towing one.

My question is, how does the first bloke think that 300ml in engine capacity is really going to mean that much over time, when the TDV6 pulls like a petrol engine. I just dont get some peoples line of thinking. Matt

I thought the V6 diesel was derived from the Jag diesel which came from Peugeot. Now Peugeot have been building diesels for a long time.

I try to avoid both Overlander and the Aust 4WD Forum as you will never get rational discussion about Land Rovers on there.

Funny how they always rubbish LR reliability. Yet one bloke was just talking about his Toyo which has cost him over $15K in repairs.

It just shows that Toyota's and Nissan's approach of big is better, the engines used by them, appart from the 3.0L Nissan have been using, and they didint do real well there did they, they go for massive big engines, not giving anyone the opportunity to go for heaps of power and no economy or adequate power and good economy. I mean you can choose between a gas guzzling low tech petrol V8 or in Nissan's case a 4.8L Petrol 6 with a hole in its fuel tank, or the 4.2 Litre big diesel donks, which might pull off road etc but arent the nices motor in terms of economy and refinement. Holden do the same, instead of improving the 5.0L Holden V8 they go out and get a huge american one and put a bigger exhaust on it when they want more power. Now they are getting a 6.0L american donk. Ford upsized a little, but its far more technologically advanced and in my opinion a much better engine. Matt

This is true and the reason why I bought a 5 year old Disco2. Resale prices on Toyota are ridiculous and I think the Disco prices are good because so many people believe the uninformed crap they hear.

I didn't have to do much research to find that the complaints about the LR were little more than Toyota and Nissan drivers trying to feel superior.

    Cheers

People hear a bit about loose plastic or a leaking windscreen and it automatically get turned into poor reliability. I admit there are some annoying rattles in my disco, but i paid considerably less than the bloke who went out and bought a similar aged cruiser or patrol, and he then has to spend $'s on accessories to make it as good off road as the disco is standard. No brainer if you ask me.

If the dickheads on overlander pulled their heads out of their **** then more people would be driving land rovers, when someone asks advice on what to look for they immediately tell them not to buy one cause they are crap. With some research and knowledge you can get a disco alot cheaper and just as reliable as any cruiser. Matt

Matt, you've hit the nail on the head!
but i paid considerably less than the bloke who went out and bought a similar aged cruiser or patrol, and he then has to spend $'s on accessories to make it as good off road as the disco is standard.
When I had to sell the Vitara manual due to ill health, my purchase brief was simple:
had to be an auto, had to be tall to avoid bending for entry & exit, and most importantly for me, had to be under 1 thou changeover.
I spent months looking, and my budget was a vehicle worth the same as the Vitara, about 6 thousand or so. I test drove an 84 LandCruiser first, rough as guts with 250k on it, petrol' and an 83 Patrol MQ I think, I drove the Rangie last.....made up my mind even before I got out of the car yard lot! Even better, I got 12 months rego + CTP and the only extra $$ was the RTA stamp duty..........Happy? You bet!
Within the next 24 months I'll have my ideal tourer, able to go almost anywhere I want offroad, and in comfort. Bugger the fuel economy!
BTW, it hasn"t missed a beat either........Cheers Scott
