Sat Navs

After a great weekend in the Vic high country with a group of mates . I used for the first time a Hema Sat nav that was a present . The only place I could fix It is onto the windscreen ! Now on the way home there was a police stop , doing the Breath test . My mate was in front of me , he was told to take his Tom Tom off the screen or face $230 fine plus 3 demerit points . I was lucky as they didn't stop me . I have a new Defender due at the end of the month , can anyone tell me were to fit a Hema Sat Nav as they don't look like they have much room around the larger dash ? Now the wind screen can't be used !!.. thanks Jim

Where on the screen was it mounted? The State motoring bodies indicate it should be low down in the right hand corner.

Ron , my mates was in the middle low don , That's where mine was as well , but I didn't get checked . I suppose when I get the new Defender , I'll have to see what keeps within the law . The Hema HN7 has quite a big screen !!.. Jim

That's where mine has sat for as long as I've had the thing. That and a crash cam and as I sit tall in the seat it doesn't obstruct vision.
If only our cops in WA would police some of the things now described as "discretionary offences" other than minor speeding and other nit picking offences which aren't going to kill others on the road. What about mums with their windows shaded virtually all round including the half of the windscreen they don't look out of!

Although as the cops noses seem glued to their speed alert things I don't suppose that's going to happen any time soon.

If I had mine in the recommended position it would partially obscure my vision, in the centre doesn't.

On a D1 low and right is not possible unless you use a small screen unit, low and center is out of line of sight.

Low on the right is fine until the suction cup fails, then it becomes mounted on the road unless you have the window up, and I have had plenty of suction cups fail as they get older.

The Mazda 2 comes with a fixed navigator etc screen in the centre of the dash, sticking up well above the line of the dash and blocking part of the view of the windscreen. Works fine though.
Are the cops going to fine people for having an original fitting?

In the Defender, I had mine originally on the right hand side low down, but it was annoying as the power lead had to drape over the steering column, plus it meant the passenger couldn't do the navigating. Now I've moved it to the centre and its fine.

When you say centre , Do you mean centre screen , or centre in front of the radio ? cheers Jim

I have mine just above the clock on my puma,probably only protrudes above the screen about an inch and does not intrude into the field of vision. In Victoria, Vicroads have a document and I think it is Vehicle Standards Information 29 which deals with front viewing obstructions when the driver is sitting in a normal position with the seat right back. It goes on to state the various angles that must have clear vision. The area that must be clear is above the front of the bonnet/bullbar and 10 degrees above on the horizontal plane. It must be clear 15 degrees to the right of straigh ahead and 56 degrees to the left. It says that aerials must be to the left as far as possible and if more than 30mm in diameter should be painted black and must not intrude into the field of vision as above.
