Whats a must do in Darwin/Kakadu

    Hi All,
I am due to leave on a trip to darwin tuesday week with the family, we have limited time (6 weeks roughly) and plan to leave newcastle, head to Uluru then up to darwin, then come back via the gulf, then home down the QLD coast.

Now i have a pretty good idea of where we will be and when but just wanted to pick everyones brains and get some opinions on things you would consider a must see/do along that trek.

Now our visit around Uluru will be very brief as we plan to come back for a more thorough trip around the area so this trip is more aimed at getting to Darwin fast(around a week to get there) and then spend more time up the top.

Any suggestions on places to see? i would love to find some more remote camping not so well travelled by your average tourists...

    thanks.

It's a great time of year to be heading that way.

I could suggest lots of beautiful places in Litchfield or Kakadu NP's but if I was to name a favourite it would be Gunlom Falls in Kakadu. An ok 4wd road in, camping with amenities at the base of the falls... good swimming and a MUST walk up to the amazing rock pools above the falls for another swim and to take in the view.

    Enjoy!

Second vote here for Gumlon. I'd be surprised if you need a 4WD to get in there though. I grew up in the nearby mining townships of Moline and El Sharana. We used to ride in there on pushbikes on the weekends. When I went out there with the family, it was in an Austin Freeway wagon. Last time I took my family there (we were living in Alice Springs), we were in a VL Commodore and had no trouble at all getting in there.

When I knew the place (learnt to swim there when I was a kid), it was called UDP Falls - most of the older locals would still know it by this name. In the first Crocodile Dundee movie, they called it "Waterfall Creek". At about this time, the tree huggers discovered that the original name (UDP) was short for "Uranium Development Project" - and were duly horrified, so the name "Waterfall Creek" stuck for quite some time. Later when there was a trend to re-name everything in the NT to aboriginal names, the name "Gumlon" emerged.

There's plenty of other interesting spots in the area that are not on the map (such as the chain of rock-holes in behind the old South Alligator mine workings) - but you need to find someone with local knowledge to tell / show you where these are. There's also a very nice rock-hole and waterfall in the escarpment just north of the Mary River roadhouse if you're coming in from Pine Creek. This one is definitely not on the map, and the track in requires a vehicle with reasonable ground clearance. Used to be a good cycle ride out from Moline to this one. Very cold water from memory, as the rock-hole virtually never sees the sun.

On the other side of El Sharana, Flying Fox Creek was always a good camping, fishing and swimming spot. I wouldn't swim there now though - this feeds directly into the South Alligator River and the is area is known to be frequented by large snapping handbags. It is close to the site of the proposed Coronation Hill Uranium / Platinum mine.

We used to have our school sports days on the flats alongside the Mary River, with swimming races / water sports etc in the river. Definitely wouldn't be game to go swimming in there today though.
    Cheers .........

Cahill's crossing in Kakadu is worth a look, if you are lucky and the tides are right you will see some big crocs feeding.
The locals do a boat tour upstream of the crossing, goes up a few klms and you get to see loads of crocs and plenty of good commentary.

Go to the Injalak indigenous art centre at Gunbalunya (in Arnhem Land, beyond Kakadu) about 20 minutes the other side of Cahill's Crossing.

Yes a permit is required to cross over, and watch the tidal movement for sure. The locals - together with the crocs - love to watch the vehicles traversing when things are looking hairy. Get your tide times sorted and it's piece of cake.

Its a big collection of warbirds and vehicles besides just the B-52. Since I was there they've scored an F111.
The backstory of the American Cobra attack chopper (donated) is plain weird in a Believe-it-or-Not sort of way.
    $30 entry for the family.
