Petition to support the local steel industry.

    State of Steel

Just asking if people could sign an online petition to get the same level of support for our local industry that they do in the U.S.A, china and the rest of the world.
Basically the U.S legislated any govt. infrastructure uses U.S steel, not here.
If you talk to miners who have used imported steel equipment, they need to order 2-3 grades higher to get the actual grade they need/ordered. This will put peoples lives at risk in the future. Unfortunately the accountants don't see this and incorrectly assume a chinese grade is identical to the same locally produced product. This was demonstrated locally with the roof over win stadium. Imported steel built by the cheapest contractor, with the local steelworks as a backdrop. It failed 18 days after having a full stadium, potentially crushing hundreds, and was lucky to only be a partial sag not a total collapse.

I supply to the other end of the steel industry (manufacturing / welding) I know how bad it is. I also agree with the variations in the steel grades too. Hear it every day when the welding procedures for a specified steel grade don't work.

The steel suppliers up my way are feeling the pinch. One has even closed their doors.

Have you heard of project iron Boomarang? That would be a good start to getting our industry back up to speed, value-adding to our own resources here rather than just shipping it off and buying it back.

The sinking of the Titanic in 1912 with serious loss of lives was a combination of several stuff ups. Interesting to note one that probably contributed that came to light after the wreck was located. Tests of the steel from the hull apparently showed it was inferior quality and brittle. I think with sulphur in it. Maybe with better steel the same collision would have caused less damage and the ship would not have sunk. Wonder if problem was caused with the "bean counters" being too interested in cheap price and not enough in quality.

Too little too late, cheap steel from MY/ KR/ CN has been coming in for years especially since FTA's came into force and will only get worse once the Chafta is signed .

It'll be O.K. we've just signed a Free Trade Deal with China, things can only get better! NOT

How can it be free trade on a level playing field when workers overseas get locked into factories, the Government sets the pay rates without reference to cost of living or worker organisations, their domestic currency isn't floated on the World market and there is no systems of workplace safety, welfare, pensions or mandatory leave provisions.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

I signed. We need to make more steel here and not import so much. Governments should support local industries within reason.
I could say more about that, but it would rapidly go political, so I won't in General Chat.
