Why should an actor get special treatment? Any other smuggler would have had the illegally imported animals euthanised and would be fined, imprisoned and probably deported.

This fiasco is not over yet because it looks like the pilot is going to face charges.
I was amused at the US media, who first made jokes about how we were treating dear Jonny and then, all of a sudden, overnight, they too turned on him and his dogs, telling the US public how potentially dangerous the affair was.
So if he, and more importantly, his wife, do not want to come back here, no loss. There are plenty of yanks, only too happy to come here and not break our laws.

AT RESTIt would be different if you tried to sneak something into the US that contravened their laws. Yanks just seem to have their heads up their asses too much and trivialize other countries' laws thinking they are above them.

I don't think Mr Depp is representative of the entire US population. It could be said that Australians all suffer from Tall Poppy Syndrome which is why we dislike big powerful people and nations so much. But that would be just as big a generalisation.
I'm in the 'who cares' camp. Crocodile Dundee probably broke a law or two getting his "that's not a knife...this is a knife" Bowie into the US. It's just a bit of payback. We'll all survive in spite of ourselves
