Will Tdi 200 make it?

G'Day

Just wondering... will TDi200 make it to drive across Australia from Perth to Sydney and forth back home?

As We are planning to drive to eastern state and back with my wife and 2 little kids for holiday (July 2006 for 5 weeks) in our Disco TDi200 1993 which it nearly 200,000km on the clock and already done re-new timing belt and regular service every 5000km...

Or should I get a better Disco like TD5?...Any advise welcome.

Thank.

Christopher.

obviously a TD5 would be better,,
but the 200 should do it ok too

overheating seems to be the major concern with TD's,,

this might have gotten a more technical response in the "other" forum

Mate, I'd take my 1995 V8 over and back, and she's got over 200 000km on the clock. Given that a diesel should have greater longevity than a petrol, you should be ok. Just make sure get it serviced and everything checked out before you go, even more so if you're planning to be doing a good bit of 4WDing.
On the other hand, a TD5 Disco would be nice even if you weren't planning a big trip.

Piece of cake chris, just give it the works the weekend before you go, ie all oils- diffs, Transfer case, gearbox and engine, regardless of when you last did it, i would also have it serviced before you go back, just the engine should be fine in this case. Make sure you get the radiator done, preferably by a professional as they will be more thourogh with the flush that you with a hose. If you do it, take he radiator out and turn it upside down and flush the crap out the top. Going against the flow of water when it circulates will get more crap out. Check any other basic stuff like alternators, fuel pumps, and gaskets that might be on the way out, check your wheel bearings aswell, wouldnt hurt to at least repack them if you havent recently done it. Just check all the stuff out that suffers more from general wear and tear, the engine wont be the problem if it has been well serviced and any problems rectified straight away, its all the other things that wear out quicker, like alternators etc. Matt

As long as you keep it maintained, no drama. I sold my 300 TDI a year ago with 270000km on the clock and it was still going strong 8)

Should do it easily Chris. Just remember to do a full inspection and cahnge all fluids before leaving, carry a spares kit including hoses, belts spare oils and fluids, tools etc. Also make sure you have a good roadside assist such as RAC, NRMA that will help you out should the worst happen. More importantly carry enough spare food and water for 4-5 days if you are going remote and consider an epirb or a sat phone.

My 200TDI Disco's done 290 000 km now - not a problem engine-wise (I've changed the timing belt twice now). Only dramas have been me breaking diffs doing silly stuff

We drove up to the Kimberley and back (towing a trailer), and then the Pilbara and back (non-stop sitting on 110 ~ 120 kph) without a drama. No overheating (?), no noises, leaks, oil use etc. As everyone has noted, just get it serviced properly before you go, always carry a few spares (_just_ in case) and most importantly, enjoy yourselves!

Cheers,

Gordon
