Carnage avoided near Jenolan Caves

Hi Forumers,

After a bit welcomed rain on Saturday, Ace and Myself caught up with several AULRO members brave enough to camp out in the dismal overnight conditions not far from Jenolan Caves(that was after some sight seeing of our own looking for the group )

Things started of rather well, even though I have yet to find the right pink bits. Mrs Redback told us they were tied to a tree to signal the track( Me wondered what exactly was down a track that had Pink bits tied to a tree that didn't involve calling the police )

Like most outings things started well, that was until we hit the dead end 8O .

With a set of tracks leading to heaven Discowhite was the first to try out those new Muddies, to the top he went with relative ease. Next on the will do list was Redback, but the slippery conditions made it a little more difficult without the muddies. And this is where the fun stopped and the recovery game began.

Being at the bottom of the hill chin wagg'n with those still entering the dead end. I started up the hill in time to see Redback stuck sideways after sliding while turning back. The unfortunate part was that there where several trees that seemed to alittle to enthusiastic to have Redback part with some hard earned cash to repair his beloved disco.

Battle Stations was called as we all set to prevent the trees from their true meaning in life(which for the uneducated is to interupt the union between paint and panels on all vehicles)

After sometime of deliberation on which tree was better suited to the job, we then devoted equal time to the operation of Redbacks hand winch( a subject of great disapointment being that the only person proficient with it was unable to leave his vehicle )

The after everyone had imput it was decided that the better way to avoid further involvement for the eager trees was to attach an anchor point to the front of the disco to prevent it sliding further whilst being winched from behind.

This is when everything went dark and my memory becomes fuzzy as I was somehow volunteered to operate Redback's Hand Winch aka Black Snake :? . After a length of time of which would not gain me entry in to the Stone brothers pit crew it was time for a well earned rest and looking to the corner to tag the next willing recipient I found Mick to pass on the Black Snake Baton to.

Needless to say with some careful pruning and more recover team members then a deepsea salvage operation the captured disco was tagged and released to play another day

However due to certain time restrictions place on both Ace and Myself we were prevented from staying out late with our friends to play.

Let's just say both of our mums said we had to do our home work.

Oh before i thank all involved in my recovery we had fun at the next track we went too and the funny thing was it was just across the road from our camp  8O for those who had to go home to mummy

A big thanks to Jason, Matt(Ace), Phil(Discowhite) and Mick(treebruiser) for the recovery, funny how hesitation and not picking the right line can get you into trouble

Cheers Baz.

had a bit of fun myself......

with stock tyres and highway pressures on tracks i normally use as rally tracks....the rain had turned them to greasy mud......

while going up hill lurch stopped moving forward and started backing back down the hill.....with four wheels still spinning forward............

there was no stopping.....with the brakes locked on he was still sliding backwards down the hill till the trailer jacknifed and gave him a poke in the ribs.....and he stopped!!

i dropped the pressures down to about 18 PSI and just managed to get up the hill.....

i thought i was gonna have an extra long weekend as it rained on saturday night right through till sunday lunch time...and there was only the one way in and out of the property....

i aired down to 16psi and hooked up the trailer to the cruiser which had BFG ATs and we slipped and slid our way out last night without any more dramas....

even with the rain its always good to sit infront of the camp fire.....much better than watching TV...........

all i gotta do now is invest in muddies.....

baz....what pressures were you running?
would different pressures make much difference under the conditions you experienced?

Sunshineless state   . We had plenty of sunshine yesterday with Camel Landy. So much sunshine that we played in the hills until dark and that wasn't because there was any need for recovery.

Mark's Landy is one heck of serious bit of 4WD kit - I was impressed.

That was more directed at having a dig at hiline, but when you go fishing you take any nibbles you can get. Just kidding PCH, i actually like victoria, i prefer melbourne to sydney.

I cant wait to see it, i am looking forward to getting up close to a Camel Land Rover. Matt

He had the Cooper ST-C's on ron.

I dont think, and redback would probably agree, that in the recovery situation the tyre pressure he was using was at all the problem, he and discowhite got up the hill ok, but it was the position baz turned around in that was the problem, baz tried to do a 3 point turn, as there were heaps of trees, the slope wasnt to bad where he was, but this left him little room to manuvre so he could get the vehicle pointing down the hill, eventually he was only inches away from two trees on the drivers side. All it took, as jason said, was an anchor at the front to stop it sliding more and a hand winch to drag the rear around. Peice of cake. Matt
