However, I don't think it should be a crime for someone who has decided that life is just too hard to arrange to quietly fade off. Nor do I think it should be a crime to provide reasonable assistance to someone who is in a good state of mind and has voluntarily decided to end it all.
As my elderly father said after undergoing two weeks in emergency following a major collapse from his lung cancer, "Next time, don't bother!"
Mind you, any attempt to actively encourage depressed people to top themselves should also be strongly prevented, I think.
