Yes as a geologist you are very aware of tectonic movements, however as Australia was connected to Antarctica through Tasmania to form part of the supercontinent Gondwana and now Tasmania is no longer attached to Australia. It would be a reasonable hypothesis that Australia is moving Northward at a greater velocity than Tasmania, more than that Australia has bumped into New Guinea causing the Owen Stanley Ranges would be secondary evidence of Australia's Northward movement and therefore away from Tasmania! :D
