Try that with a plastic bag and you'd probably end up charged with murder by asphyxiation .
Some might be happy if were filled with glue or silver paint

I'm assuming you are referring to the bag in the discussion?

Has the dolphin population in SA doubled since, or is there any other tangible evidence to measure this as a success? Also I suspect any success has been totally nullified by an increase in plastic pollution from the rest of the world.

Remember this is just a part of what SA do that is different from most. Along with the can and bottle recycling scheme, litter in the waterways in SA is dramatically lower than any other place in Australia. Not sure why everyone is having such a hard time with this concept to be honest - plastic shopping bags are known to produce the majority of plastic waste found dumped and in waterways, etc. Banning them is a no brainer. It's not going to fix everything, but does that mean we shouldn't make a start or be proud of trying to lead th world in litter reduction?

So fishermen/person's aren't just taking a garbage bag or similar plastic packaging to put their bait in. Then the wonderfully plastic free stream flows into an ocean full of broken plastic fishing lines and lost nets. I'd like someone to explain how a so called non-reusable shopping bag, used as a bin liner or even just discarded in a bin, in say suburban Adelaide, ends up it a water way, surely the council garbage collection/tip is to blame then?

Twenty plus years ago, SA country tips were often just abandoned road metal quarries and the barbed wire fences between them and the nearest paddock were always festooned with people's single use plastic bags. Nowadays, waste is managed at every level and you won't see that sort of thing any more. When rubbish isn't blowing around everywhere it's easier for council crews to keep up with the remaining trash thrown out by the bogan element.

you are dead right, and if others saw the amount of plastic in the waterways that I do in my Volunteer Marine Rescue role , you'd all want it all banned.

ask Seaworld and their animal rescue team about plastic , but be ready to duck

If there is a reduction of one plastic bag getting into the sea, it is worth it isn't it? I know we can't solve the worlds problems, but every little thing helps. Anyway, my point was really about it NOT BEING HARD...we keep reusable bags in the car and take those when we go shopping. Easy. The way the eastern states are going on about it, it is like the sky is falling in(maybe the bags clutter the Toorak tractors boot space...first world problems phhhh)
