Good for you. I was told by a wise man [ happily retired] that you should start planning for retirement when you reach age 40. I have people ask me " what do you do all day" To which I think......you are not prepared, what I do may not suit you. The most important thing is to keep busy in something you are happy doing. Only you can work that out.
Having an income is good, but clearing away major debts is better. You can not prosper on a pension, merely survive. Contact with other like minded people is important, create a network of friends who can support your lifestyle [ grow your own veggies, keep chooks, take up bee keeping, join a wood working club, the opportunities are endless, entirely up to the individual.] The barter system is alive & well out there in wrinkle land. Most of these lifestyles should be set up while you are working, while you have a wage coming in. And, most importantly, grow your super. Retirement can be enjoyable, if you prepare properly. Bob
unless you're greek
Yes, we're in the process of transitioning. Already bought the retirement property and parked the daughter in there to pay rent and help us buy it. Got solar, water, septic, vegies and chooks. Now working on the granny flat for us and then the shed for ME! Will have to sell in the city plus raid some super to pay it out, but it will work. Currently putting a chunk extra into super. Some super x 2 plus 2 x pension should keep us above water - just.

Hi,
My parents retired about 1977 with a little Super which they spent on eliminating any debt, bought a new truck and went on a big trip.
They got the Age Pension and lived comfortably on that, still able to travel and enjoy life.
Good health and no debts I think are the main factors in living well on a frugal income.
Ciggies, bar prices, and gambling are what seem to be a common non essential component of financial discomfort.
Cheers
I retired 4 years ago, bad job, massive stress, after a year got bored and back in the game now.
Great job, making a difference, for example delivered mobile coverage and TV to 10,000's people who never had it,
Down side away from the family and Defender :(, months on end.
Just been diagnosed with Cancer in the early stages, but work is to much fun.
And BTW plenty of super so that's not a factor.
What to do
Yep, it hasn't spread, and surgery will fix it, but kinda attached to my prostate. Mind you it was a thread on this forum that made me go off for the bowel cancer check, so that's a win.
Been a lot to absorb in the last 10 days
