VCs is a good one.
Let's not forget though that this thread is about saving our manufacturing capability, and ideas that might achieve it.
why not do what the UK did for their latest ice research vessel?
we could have subby mc subface etal.
Personally I see it as a win,it'll create jobs everywhere it goes as long as the Unions pull their heads in,in WA down the line it will keep our industry going as they will be based here and serviced. We need to dump the Turkey as it is a black hole and buy SAAB Gripens with a similar deal making them here. Pat
I read one comment that one of the reasons the Japanese bid lost out was that Japanese are shorter than us and their design did not have long enough beds for Aussies. Extra space for 80 or so taller Aussies to sleep would be important in a submarine, I guess.
It's obviously a good win that the submarines and frigates will be built here and will create a lot of jobs and demand for products here.
Mind you, do we really need submarines or could we secure our trading routes using surface vessels and aircraft?
Good built in oz, but for 50 billion ouch.
Arrium are in trouble now, subs won't start till 2020, (and in reality subs use little of their long product)by which time their fate will be known, Toyota gone, Gm gone so for every one of those 2800 "new jobs" there will be 20 lined up.
It will be very interesting to see the differences in the tenders between Germany and France as well as Japan . They will eventually be leaked.
As to the 100,000 jobs examin it pickles, in Whyalla alone it's 30% of their employment directly, so really a vast majority of you include all the people employed by Arrium wages spent locally. Over 10,000 jobs in one hit and a ghost town if it's shut down.
Well my friend,...You should be happy with this news.
The Australian Newspaper is quoting Defense info stating that by the Turnbull Govt deciding to make the Subs in Aus, 30% has been added to the total cost. It goes on to say that 85% of the cost of the 3000 jobs created is therefore subsidised by the Govt. Now, ya gotta be happy with that?
Pickles.
There are national security arguments in favour of us building and sustaining the subs locally. For example, if war interrupted our shipping avenues, we could see our subs sitting in port because we couldn't get the parts from an overseas manufacturer to fix them. What value do you place on national security? Difficult question to answer. But this issue is certainly about more than just the cost.
Already said that post 112;)
Your well behind the news. Also defended would have preferred the hybrid approach where the first 1-2 where built in France with our guys there training up on visas and the other 10-11 built here as it would have been faster. Simply while the first 1-2 are being constructed and guys trained , facilities are built here, now they have to wait until facilities are built.
Post 112 says nothing of the sort,....it is masked in the usual, & continual, negativity that pervades all of your posts relative the Government & "bailing businesses out" etc etc etc.
Mate why can't you show some positivity. This is good news mate, BE GLAD about it.
Can you say ANYTHING good about the Sub contract?
