Australia is Australia whether it has people living there or not.
Clipperton Island has a flag but no inhabitants.

Antarctica has a flag but no nationals, they're all visitors.

Mick, Mick, Mick, I'm not talking about uninhabited areas having a flag, I'm talking about is a country made up of it's inhabitants No people equals an uninhabited area and I think Antartica does have people living there, does it not. Even short stay residents such as scientists equals a population.

By the way, you forgot the Moon it does have some nations flags flying there but no population.

I also didn't mention many other places with flags and no people living there.

What are you telling us? Even tourists and visitors should be represented in our flag?

The point I am making is the flag represents the country, not the inhabitants.
I have given examples of places with flags and no inhabitants and/or nationals.

Where it gets silly is when people think the flag represents the inhabitants. That is when we get countries with multiple flags. Each group has a flag to represent their individual group at the exclusion of all others. That is when it gets decisive.

Actually I have difficulty thinking of a single flag that reflects the origins of most of the citizens of that country.

If you can think of one, it would be interesting to know. In fact, if you think about it, most of the well known flags reflect either the history of the country (e.g. France, where it reflects the revolution, US, where it reflects the formation of the Union) or some characteristic of the country, often a map, landmark, or wildlife or plant(e.g PNG, Canada, Cyprus, Lebanon, Cambodia). Flags often have very pronounced religious symbols, which may or may not reflect current religious position in the country (e.g. Many dominantly Islamic countries include a crescent and star, many dominantly Christian countries include one or more crosses) .

The flag of a country represents the country, not its citizens, and not the origins of the citizens.
