"Fully autonomous vehicles that do away with the steering wheel and controls will be cheaper and thus tempting to the new-tech-junkies, submissive, sheepy, hand-over-control group. You control the car with the navigator, you type or vocalise your destination, and it goes there, if the program decides to allow you to.

Under full control of the government over time, so they can stop vehicles used in terrorist acts, or from going where they are 'not supposed to', etc. Controlled by AI algorithms.

Sometimes it will just not go where you want to go, or do crazy things like steer you into a bridge pylon because of a temporary glitch, as will likely happen with such a complex system (when you are a stressed out or mangled wreck you will hear it repeating the mantra, 'cross your fingers and restart the machine and it should load up okay this time')."

The idea of a fully autonomous vehicle that isnt connected to the internet, and that doesnt become subject to government control at some time, is folly.

Hang on, so you're saying an autonomous vehicle needs to be connected to the internet all the time? 😆 How the **** is that going to happen when we can't even get decent internet to our homes? 😆😆😆. No internet would preclude them in around 90% of Australia by area...

Autonomous vehicles DO NOT and WILL NOT require an internet connection to run - it's in the software on board. Yes, for updates while parked at home in the garage most likely, but not while driving.

Of course they will, just like all new technology. There will be periods of wifi free operation, but they will be more effective when all systems are active. Most will be a combination of internet, gps tracking and inbuilt cameras and sensors. My 4G mobile internet connection is often better than my home NBN connection. Of course they will be connected and monitoring you, including cameras and microphones in your car ‘for alertness monitoring’ only 👺

And yes a huge % of the Australian continent will be precluded (I hope) not only due to a lack of internet coverage, but also white lines! for the dumb vehicle to follow. Our city-centric world is about to become more so.

There may be endless sensors and cameras to assist with dirt road / off road driving, but I certainly won’t be giving up the steering wheel. And I’ll enjoy being human autonomous more than ever.

You would preclude over 90% of Australia by saying that they couldn't go where there is no internet, and current semi autonomous vehicle under test around the world have no requirement to be connected to the internet while travelling. To make this mandatory would halt development in its tracks which clearly wont happen - there's too many rich people with irons in the fire here.

I hope they really enjoy the cities for many years. I don't go there. I won't be affected.

Yes that’s right. 90% of the Australian population don’t live on 90% of the continent. Most of the testing is City based for the majority. If anyone thinks autonomous cars won’t be connected automatically to the internet at every opportunity they’re kidding themselves es.

Ah - you said it - every oportunity. Doesn't mean they will be - or will have to be at all times like others have suggested...😉

I doubt they will be a reality while either of us are alive or at least still behind the wheel of a car, so maybe we don't have to worry. 😊
