I thought Jail was English and Gaol was Irish.

Gael is Irish. It means stranger or new comer, not a prison. Although many of Irish origin have wound up in Gaol.
I think that when spelling moves too far from it's origins, it becomes estranged from it't etymology and so looses a bit of its meaningfulness.
Jail is pre-Norman French, so older than the Norman French Gaol. Pronounced with a heavy "G".

My theory is that through the week the traffic is more predictable, all going to work/school etc and then later all going home. Traffic can be kept flowing with the traffic lights, On the weekend all vehicles are heading everywhere. Chaos.
I can often get into the city (almost) quicker in peak hour than over a weekend.

It was 40yrs ago and I vowed not to live on the northside for that reason.

40yrs later it still hasn't changed.....the traffic still slows around Burpengary for no reason......there used to be a reason 20yrs ago.

There is some pleasant inland driving that kind of parallels the Bruce , no lane blocking or hidden road rage, just nice countryside , and the journey doesn't take that much longer.

There are times I won't let a driver from the left lane merge in front of me.
I do this when there are road work signs ahead asking traffic to merge into the right lane ( which becomes I lane) all drivers and myself do the right thing and merge into the right hand lane and wait patiently to be moved on by a traffic control person.
Then you get those dicks that see the left lane you are supposed to have merged from is clear and race up to the front of our line of waiting vehicles. Then insist we should let them in even though we have been queued up for a while. they try to force themselves in front. They then get upset as none lets them in.

The left lane should be full right up to the point where the barricades begin. This allows the maximum road space to be filled, thus relieving congestion further back. Refusing to allow merger is aggressive driving IMHO. I always let them in. Even the dick heads.

i believe australia to be the odd one out here.
nowhere else in the world does everyone queue up in the righthand lane with the left empty
