The Federal Government is set to announce it will spend $1.3 billion on new light armoured personnel carriers for the Army.
The Hawkei vehicles will be manufactured by Thales Australia in Bendigo and will replace part of the Army's ageing Land Rover fleet.
The Australian Army will order 1,100 Hawkeis, which are classed as "light protected mobility vehicles".
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Defence Minister Marise Payne are today travelling to a test facility at Monegeetta, north of Melbourne, to make the announcement.
The Government estimates it will keep 170 jobs in the region and sustain another 60 in wider Victoria.
The Hawkei will follow the widely-praised Bushmaster off the production line in Bendigo.
Thales was identified in December 2011 as the Federal Government's preferred bidder, and prototypes of the Hawkei have undergone a testing process since.
Member for Bendigo Lisa Chester said it was an exciting day for the region.
"It is so needed to be able to lock in the jobs," she said.
"We have got a great team out there that have been working there for many years on developing the Hawkei prototype, so the first thing is it locks in manufacturing jobs in Bendigo.
"It is very exciting news that we are finally at the point where we are going to have the contract locked in and secured to be able to manufacture and continue to manufacture these vehicles here in Bendigo."

At just over a million a piece, they'd go like hot cakes.
I bet if they added a periscope to them, they'd outperform the Collins Class subs.
Wot? A manufacturing industry in Oz? Think of the Free Trade agreements man?
Seriously (and no, I wasn't in the paragraph above), it IS good to see we can do hi tech stuff in this country. Maybe that's our future, not mass production such as televisions and Holdens, but specialist solutions to problems. The company responsible for these vehicles is to be commended.
They said the army will get them in 2018, then they first productions will be a couple of years old already.
They will just stamp the compliance plate to 2018 I'd imagine![]()
They do look better than the Hummer.
I wonder what power plant they will be running and where it was sourced.?
Looked at this a while ago. The engine is a Steyr 3.2L turbo diesel 6 cyl. It stuck in my memory and it puts out just a bit more power than a Disco 4 3.0L ~ somewhere around 200Kw and 600Nm?? Not sure where it is being sourced from though. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will come along shortly to confirm.
And lets hope they look into selling them to other armies!!!!!!
No more ford/holden/toyota/mitsa****ty local manufacture.

Very happy to see an Australian company win the work. I was reading about these today in The Oz. sound awesome. Go well for 7 tonnes!
"The Hawkei vehicle is powered by a Steyr V6 diesel engine manufactured by Steyr Motors GmbH, Austria. The inline starter or generator offers sufficient level of electrical power to drive the C4I and mission equipment"
