There is nothing more rude than people sitting around watching someone else in trouble or stuck or what ever and not offering help. Scum of the earth people like that. Matt

Not 4wd related but on the way back from a trip a couple of years ago we came across a young couple in a broken down old Volvo by the side of the Great Northern Hwy about 4km north of Cataby roadhouse. They had three kids in the car, a toddler and a pair of very new twins which they were taking to Geraldton to see their grandparents. It was a very hot day and they were getting desperate, and had made a big cardboard sign saying something like "Help, young kids". The bloke had already walked to the roadhouse and back, the roadhouse owner had said sorry can't help. Now get this, it was the Thursday before Easter and there was a continuous stream of traffic heading north, they had been there three hours and not one person had bothered to stop, until we did.

We towed them into Cataby (stuffing my snatch strap in the process - unfortunately that was the only towing implement I had, never mind it was an old one, gave me an excuse to go shopping). They obviously didn't have much money but he tried to give me $100, I said don't worry, do someone else a favour one day.

I just couldn't believe they had been sitting there that long. Un-Australian is what it is.

that sort of behaviour is strange around here. Whenever someone has broken down at an intersection or something like that, you are sure to see someone help.

on another note, I noticed a yellow cab one day had driven out of a driveway, but had strayed off it somehow and managed to get his front left wheel hanging over a rock which was propping up the car from the jacking point. He obviously didn't understand what was going on, and he could hardly speak english, but I could see he had been trying to reverse out to no avail. He also wanted to try rolling forward, as half his car was sticking out onto the road, but I discouraged him from that because the rock would take half his underside with it lol.

There was another fella there who was already trying to help, and I said I had a vehicle to recover with, but no recovery straps. So off he dashed back home and grabbed a big thick piece of rope, which I had doubts about using. I figured it would do the job though because it was just a taxi, and pulling it back onto its front wheel wouldn't be too strenuous.

So off I go and pull him out with a quick nudge forward, and the next thing is he's asking for directions. He only said a brief thank you to the other fella, before launching into a series of questions about how to get to his next job. lol!

G'day JDNSW,

Looking forward to the warmer weather in a few weeks, I'm NOT a winter person!
I first tried naturalism when I was about 14, now I'm 44 so I guess it's more than 20 years after all

I hope I don't get the Rangie bogged on the way on or off Samurai, it can be tricky and I've never driven a full size four wheeler down the trail. Shouldn't be an issue going on the beach, but the uphill run on the way out could be interesting!

I'm sure if I get stuck someone will help, especially if I'm blocking the track 8O as it's a little narrow!

Cheers Scott 8)

I reckon!!

When I had my modified Sierra, and my brother had his[2001 I think]we came across 4 large 4WD's stuck in the Lavis Lane entrance onto Stockton, about midway onto the dunes, the sand was so soft and aerated even the quads were having to be pushed out 8O
We spent over an hour helping de-bog stuck fourbies, two of which were late model Jap auto's, seems as it was a very hot 40c+ day the auto boxes overheated and simply stopped working!! I recall one was a Pajero... the owner said he read the manual and it said to leave it to cool!

We hooked up the two Zooks and skulldragged him to one side to others could get past[with some character scratches!] apparently the electronic autos have this safety feature.......Im sure my old 3 speed Torqueflite doesn't!
Cheers Scott

I agree Tony, the only time I miss 'Tonka' is the soft sand, big tyres + locked diffs + rockhopper gearing + 350mm clearance = pretty much go anywhere, and do it easy!

Still, gotta love the sound of that V8 at about 4000 rpm

Cheers Scott.

Theres nothing quite like a V8, thats for sure. If only fuel was half the price. Matt
