BOGGED PATROL & LANDCRUISER ON STOCKTON 30th July

G'day All,

I took a few pix of a current model Patrol diesel auto and Lancruiser V8 auto that both managed to bog themselves below the high tide mark on Stockton Beach[NSW]when I was up there this Saturday. I'd post 'em here but I don' t know how ops:
Talk about a comedy of errors.......the LC driver stopped well below the top tide mark, facing north and paralell to the beach, his mate stopped next to him facing south, but a little further up the beach, all the passengers piled out, had a paddle and piled back in to the cars and moved off.....well the Patrol did anyway! The LC driver tried to start off facing uphill, all wheels spinning madly and the whole vehicle heading straight for China, his answer was to bury the right boot, yep right down to the chassis. Not a great deal of front wheel travel on the IFS 'Cruisers eh?
I walked over or a look[and to take some pix]and offered some advice and a snatch[he asked what that was!]but there was a language barrier as I don't speak Portugese........anyway his Cousin[as it turns out]comes back after ten minutes and stops-yep, right next to the stuck LC, hops out and talks to the driver[in Portugese]grabs his strap, jumps back in his Patrol and TRIES to drive off, it immediately sinks to the rails too! I nearly wet myself ..........he realises the only place he going is down and backs off. By this time I've got the old VHS video out too, and I offer a snatch for the Patrol driver, at least he had real recovery points. I got to try out my new Hayman Reese hitch too. 1st go, Rangie stops dead, digging four nice even holes, back up and down a few times, another run up and moves the Patrol about 1 metre. OK I thought, time to get serious.
Reverse up leaving about 2 metres of slack in the strap, tramp it and keep the wheels spinning very slowly and out he comes.

Given the LC was sunk so deep, I suggested the Patrol guy use his winch on it from further up the beach, he set it up and the LC guy sat there without trying to move, the LC was pulling the Patrol towards it

8O
I called a halt, dropped the LC tyres down to 15 psi, while the waves were washing around the rims, mentioned him to apply a little power at the same time as the winching was being done, then notice one of the kids in the group was playing in the sand NEXT to the straining cable....I casually mentioned the cable could easily take a head off to the kid's mum, I bet his ears are still ringing from the shouting! Anyway, both vehicles were recovered, could have easily been two more wrecks to keep the Sygna company but all worked out in the end

Yes, it was both vehicles first time on sand....and they had no idea. The Patrol driver said his dealer told him not to use his vehicle for snatch recoveries because it was an Auto  and being in the country for only a few weeks I wonder what else they were told? Turns out both families had emigrated from Chile and were very very thankful for assistance offered. What really surprised me was there were better set up fourbies parked at the wreck that didn't even offer to help in any way. Even my brother[who was in his Vitara]commented on this, I just think lending a hand is the Aussie way.
Sorry about the length of the post but I just had to share it!
Cheers Scott. Landrover-one Toyota-nil Nissan-nil

Another example of more money and sense....a winch can be very dangerous if used incorrectly or poorly maintained..shold be a basic safety course given when purchased (OH & S). My Army course was 2 days of extreme safety concious winching. Ask Landrovermick he was with me...
Great story though and a welcome breakfast read...

This warms the heart
It's easy to say bl%%dy toyo/nissan drivers/foreigners/beginners/idiots etc etc but my mom always used to say friendlyness costs you nothing :!:
Even if nobody ever gives you a helping hand back, doing a good neighbourly deed is rewarding and satisfying.
At least we landrover drivers are more courteous/helpful/relaxed than most others :?: :?: :?
Talking in very general terms here, not bagging other makes
Photo's would be good

If they were from Chile, it was Spanish that you couldn't understand, not Portuguese.

What does this mean :?: It means you may know Portuguese.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Well done Scott, you should have told them at this stage that they should go out and trade them in on D3's it appears they beleive and do anything they are told.

Some people are just really rude as they would be the first ones to get the ****s if they were stuck and didnt get offered help, but if someone else is stuck they dont want to waste their time. Its not an Aussie thing Scott its a Landy thing, we are much nicer people. Matt
