Ahh dear Andy welcome to the modern OH&S world . The Australian mining industry has been no drinks on site for a long time now, plus on many sites they have a daily blow in the bag just to make sure you're sober for work.

It was soooo refreshing in the Congo, to roll back into the office from the field and the exploration manager have a fridge of of cold Heineken in his office ready to dispense.

And on another note there was a good selection of slingshots at all the camping stores in Cape Town last week. Again a different world...

    Cheers

    Steve

Same in the bus industry here, Andy. No alcohol on the premises at all, has been that way for a number of years. Drug testing is done every now and then though, not daily as in other industries. By every now and then I mean about six monthly, you'll rock up at work and be asked to pick a colour marble out of a bag, red you are tested and blue you are not.

ps. I seem to get the red ones all the time though. Nothing to hide 'cause I have never taken drugs and no longer drink.

No alcohol at my workplace, not a drop. We do have coffee machines though.

I've worked at office sites that have the same rules as in the field. Random drug and alcohol tests. If found positive, you are escorted off site and contract terminated. Jay walking, crossing on a red light - all reportable OH&S incidents.

Funny how the "standards" seem to be applied only to the work sites, but often not in head office.

The company I was working for until recently strictly enforces the "no alcohol on site" rule on all of its mining and civil sites. Yet there is always a ready supply in a fridge that is not used for any other purpose in head office, and "a couple of beers on a Friday afternoon" is standard practice there.

As I now only work on an occasional basis as a "consultant" to the company - the rules don't apply to me. I have a beer fridge in my office.

The OP is exactly why I decided, after getting out of my last business, I would never have a business where I employ anyone.

In my last business I had an employee, who had keys, come in after hours and break into our safe and clean out about two and a half K.

There was overwhelming evidence that it was him, but as it could not be categorically proved, he was not charged.
After sacking him, he threatened me with unfair dismissal. I was advised to reinstate him.

Chris. It is a shame that the bloke did not eat a bit more peanut butter.

What I don't understand is this. How can a resignation be refused.
If you give notice and they refuse to accept it and at the expiry of the notice you don't front up for work, what happens?
Do the police come and collect you and take you to work?
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
