Agreed, new cars have awful blind spots. I check them but then do a quick glance to check as well. I hate those stupid curved mirrors that distort the image to try to give better field of view, the car looks a mile away but really it's beside you.... stupid things IMO.
I know this is a dumb question. But are the L plates visible. This sort of stuff is expected from "L" platers. I find the plates are often hidden behind tinted glass or bodywork though.
"L" plates really do need to be visible by all at the merest glimse. We all did stupid things when learning ......... Scaring the **** out of yourself is a great way not to repeat a mistake :D

Merging seems to be something here in Melb that's non existent.
Towing our camper today, I had to merg onto the freeway, got up to 110, started merging onto the freeway only to have another car (SUV) not move over at all, despite nothing being beside him,,, just no courtesy at all. Soon moved his ass over when he discovered I wasn't going to slow down to let him pass first.
And as said, use some brains in seeing that someone wants to merg, so just back off if your in the right hand lane, so the guy in the left lane can move over and let them in. Not all vehicles can get up to speed in the space given, such as trucks etc.
Good luck in the teaching guys. Been there, done that,, I'm not sure I got enough courtesy implanted though, but I do see she's quick to curse those that don't show it, so I'm hoping she at least understands.
