western union is ok if you trust the person on the other side.
my parents used it when my sister ran out of money in europe
Sounds like a scam email doesn't it
Long story, but my father is currently on a tour in South America and had his cards etc stolen in Santiago. He's finding out that the travel insurance ads don't match the service they are providing, and they are needing him to provide a whole lot of BS evidence/statements before they will send him any emergency funds, and since he's on they tour he doesn't have the opportunity or comm's to sort things out.
The bank was unable to get replacement cards to him before he departed on the tour.
Good thing is the tour is all pre-paid, so he's OK for the next few days.
His tour guide has suggested getting a family member to transfer some money via Western Union or similar that he can collect when he gets to Argentina early January.
My impression of WU has always been that its mainly for sending money to scammers.
Any tips from those who have used it, or is there a better option for Argentina?

Anyone on the tour that he trusts at least a bit? You could transfer money to someone else on the tour and they could get money out and hand it to him.
If there is someone that suits the bill but doesn't have an Australian bank account, you can send them money via PayPal. Just need their email address and they can collect it into whatever bank account they have linked to their PayPal account.
Can he transfer it via the tour company? Pay the tour company and their guide hands it out?

Any Australian EFPOS card with him at all? My son was in China earlier this year. He was able to withdraw funds on a card not credit card via a bank ATM
MasterCard Global ATM Locator?| MasterCard? Cirrus ATM worked in Shanghi saved him after an overspend
I deposited into his account here and he simply withdrew it there.
Contact the Australian embassy and arrange it through them

PM ME FOR WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR
Thanks for all the suggestions. Apparently he only had a couple of cards on him, and both were stolen, so no options there.
His usual backup for cards etc (Mum) had no interest in this trip so she's at my place for Christmas with the new great-granddaughter
I've transferred some money to him via Western Union so will see how that goes. According to their website he can pick it up at any of their agents across Argentina, and there is one in the town he's heading to today (Perito Moreno). Not cheap, with a $70 fee for $1000AUD transfer but better than him having to pawn a kidney
Doesn't sound like he's anywhere major until 2 Jan when he hits Ushuaia, but hopefully the bank has managed to get replacement cards delivered by the time he arrives, (although given the time of year I'm not 100% confident).

Shame I'm not entered in the Dakar Rally this year or I could have taken him something personally.![]()

You should find that Western Union is not a problem, other than whether the agent has enough cash to cover it at the Argentine end. El Calafate which is the town closest to the glacier is a major tourist town, so it shouldn't be a problem.
I use Western Union regularly to send cash to in laws in Peru.
As far as international money transfers go it is not regarded as dear either.
Cheers
Mike
