There is a recovery service from Inskip if needed. I'd expect it is very very expensive to break down there, but even if NRMA don't go there, they should cover the cost of towing shouldn't they?
I'm planning a trip to Fraser in a few weeks and I'm just wondering what the deal is if you need mechanical assistance or towing? Apparently NRMA and RACQ don't go there.

There used to be a workshop on Fraser many years ago, pretty sure he had a tow truck of some sorts.
A well sorted car prior is the go.......what sort of breakdown are you worried about??
If you are on facebook, these guys https://www.facebook.com/rainbowbeachtowing/?fref=ts do a lot of recoveries up there. I think Claytons towing might too.

I was looking more towards purchasing a kind of roadside assistance cover (to give cover for future trips as well)
NRMA/RACQ will only cover you on gazette roads that can be accessed by 2WD (its in the fine print)
Mainly incase of engine problems, unlikely but better safe than sorry!
It doesn't sound like such a service exists that covers Fraser.
Well done for reading the small print. I nearly signed up for the NRMA Premium Plus a couple of years ago after they advertised it for being "Any vehicle. Anywhere." The small print then redefined "Any vehicle" as being anything up to 3 tonnes and "Anywhere" means (as you found) something different to what anyone else might think "anywhere" means.

Still worth having though.
I've only used mine once and I was off-road at the time. Fortunately managed to limp out (to the end of Twins Jeep Track). What they did from there was brilliant.

Totally! I had a turbo hose fail on me at Kings Canyon last year. NRMA sorted out the tow to from Kings Canyon to Yulara and paid for three nights accommodation at the resort until they got the mechanic there got the parts from Alice Springs.
They even sorted a hire car for the duration so I could go and have another look at Uluru and Kata Tjuta
NRMA were going to put my in a nice hotel room but I opted for a powered camping spot instead. They were okay with that
So, the tow, the accommodation and the hire car were all part of my NRMA package so cost me nothing. And the mechanics at Yulara were quite reasonable too.

There was a tow service offered late last year on Fraser, by Ronnie the Rat or similar name,

By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.
