It's an el-cheapo way to do it but it works. An in-line fan, donkey dick tube, a 3 way splitter and 3 ceiling vents.

Back when I did it, maybe $200 in bits. I'm a sparkie so I could wire in the fan.

Work just had additional a/c units installed. these days you can get a single conpressor unit that will feed two units inside. Let me know and I'll check the brand if you want.

    Cheers

I have an ducted Daikin inverter system, it's 6 years old now and has been faultless. (fingers crossed!). A couple of years ago I had a brilliant brain fart to put a split system in the master bedroom so I could run that at night instead of the ducted system and save power. (Just me in the house). Anyway, after the first power bill I went back to using the ducted system, it turns out that it is far more efficient power wise, and quieter, and has a better filter...

    Cheers,

Just be aware that a ducted system will make your roof space very un-user friendly .

Insulation first is the key to not paying a truck load. Wish I owned the building at work as it had almost zero insulation in the roof.
A lot of houses in ballarat have those evaporative air conditioners. I too thought they would be about as useful as tits on a bull...... About 5years ago my brother built a new house and it had one of those units installed. Amazingly it works very well. --do you have all the windows and doors open-- They will not work in a close house as you will just get everything dripping wet, they rely on airflow to the outside world.

We have two split systems in our small bedroom house, it heats and cools ok. The small unit is at the end of the passage near the bedrooms. Given there is no direct airflow into the bedrooms, it will not directly heat or cool them, but will keep there temperature cool in summer and warm'ish in winter if the doors are left open. I'd go the ducted. If you end up with 1/2 dozen split systems over the house, it'll be ugly. Probably quite a lot cheaper to run (as you can selectively turn them on/off) but it is also 6 units to upkeep and replace.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Daikin are the top of the tree IMO, and I lean heavily toward MHI as I've had less warranty problems with them. (two in eight years)

One of the blokes I'm currently working with confirmed that's his experience too, and he said the company he used to work for had heaps of Mitsubishi Electric and Fujitsu warranty issues.

Toshiba seem pretty good too, I started to trial them as a slightly cheaper/less bells and whistles option to MHI when I had my own business, and performance and efficiency wise they are very good.
I'm not fussed with the Korean stuff at all.

    More important is the installation.

I've seen some shocking stuff done regardless of brand, and watched with amazement recently how an installer was piping up a commercial ducted system for a bar.
(We were installing the refrigeration, coolroom and beer systems)

Single phase up to 14kw nominal in a ducted system is easy, the modern inverters are incredibly efficient.
I've used 14kw ducted and 14kw commercial cassette systems in clubs and the quietness and efficiency is amazing, and as previously said, the 2.5kw and 3.5kw high wall splits are incredibly cheap to run these days, their COP is incredible.
Yes, as Rick130 says, and as I should have mentioned too, INSTALLATION is probably just as important as the unit itself.
If it's not properly designed & installed, then all the best equipment in the world will not make it work as it should.
So make sure you use a recommended installer with a good track record, the cheapest is not necessarily the best.
    Pickles.

I keep lots of rats, mice and dust in mine. Oh, and store all my excess heat in summer and cold in winter up there

Only work properly in areas of low humidity, (don't use anywhere near the coast, and that includes any coastal strip up to the divide along the eastern seaboard) and will work very well if whoever engineers it works on quite a few air changes/minute.
