Govts and police forces have been trying to do this for 50yrs and it hasn't gelled with motorists yet.....

Unfortunately the only thing that works is enforcement.....the heavier the enforcement the better the results......sad but true.

Yes. More vehicle bypasses in towns, around schools, etc is a great idea. The more Pedestrian and cyclist safety zones the better IMO. You only have to read the cyclist threads on here for a snapshot of why. Anywhere that needs a 20 or 30km limit could be vehicle free IMO. Imagine the greenlaneing for walking and cycling through our cities that would result. The notion that we must drive right to every doorstep is ridiculous. Bring on the city gridlock I say. Slow down and walk from the car zone or get a bike.

4WD's are for bush and country driving anyway. The city SUV culture is actually bonkers when you think it through. And it's actually killing the 4WD. 4WD manufacturers are now catering mainly to those USING THEM PREDOMINANTLY IN THE 30 kmhr school drop off zones!!

no, to generate revenue, they need a simple and relatively cheap automatic detection and fine issuing system where the rules are black and white. ie. speeding


If they start to need human input in determining what's right or wrong, it starts to cost money rather than generate it.

So we with bad backs and legs etc have to pay to drive around something or go even slower because ******* can't seem to teach kids to stay OFF the road.

I think it is just a way to get revenue back up.
When the urban speed limit was dropped to 50klm/h and 40klm/h pedestrian/car accidents rose by 12%.
With Inattention the largest cause of road fatalites, and the Govt. is aware of this even though they jump on speeding as the bogeyman, seems motorists are spending more time looking at their speedo than what's happening in front of them.
A Blatant revenue raiser for the Govt., to stop completely school crossing accidents why doesn't the Govt. actually spend some money on Monitored/Crossing Guards, not good for revenue, but great for protecting school kids, Regards Frank.

We all pay our taxes. In fact I'm tired of paying taxes for so many roads, when public transport and cycle / pedestrian areas are so under funded.

So are you arguing that all current green/pedestrian/cycling areas should be user pays too? Or that they should be bitumenised so road vehicle registration taxes can pay for them instead?

It wasnt that long ago when we didn't have to pay anything for simply existing in the natural environment. Now you can't park, eat or camp for free in most parks in Australia. What's next? User pays air?

Rapidly changing speed zones are a safety hazard because they distract drivers from what is happening in the traffic around them. Drivers have to watch the signs and speedos instead of the traffic.
