I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

The Police have got back to me.
5 kids are in the Lock-up!
They have 2 more to round up yet. 3 of the kids are facing 26 charges each.
So a result of sorts, I know they will all be back on the streets by tomorrow.
As angry as it gets me I feel for the kids.
Parents don't care, no future to look towards, Elders have given up & the youth programs come & go.
SWMBO & I look after 5 kids from Doomadgee & we hope we are at least giving them a chance.
I bring 1 or 2 of our kids back with me each school holiday to visit with family & friends, I really shouldn't.
The habits they pick up in a couple of weeks! Not to mention that I drop them off with their parents but after the first day or 2 the parents don't want to see them any more, very tough on the kids.
Anyway, back to upgrading my security system.

Do you know how old they are? A pity you don't have a program like this up there.

Take them round the corner and give them a good flogging, if mum and dad haven't someone needs to.
I got plenty of clips over the ear as a kid.
Can you get them on some sort of community service order just to tidy up around the roadhouse?????.Treat them to a pie chips and coke each for lunch and they with think you are king. They may leave you alone in the future.

Bob, they have those sorts of things going on all the time here but, & it's the BIG but, there is nothing at the end of the training or course.
Still no job or what ever.
It's like the Communities Security issue (I'm not the only one getting done over), there are a dozen good blokes in town that have been put through a Security course & passed, have the certificates & all that. But there are no funds to employ them, insure them, get them a vehicle, or hire a supervisor. So the course was just a wast of time & money?
This is the case with most of the courses people do. I employ about 15 people, there are about 50 people in town with the qualifications etc to work here but the reality is I can only just afford to employ 15.
People could leave Doomadgee, get a job in the city, but there is a very strong connection to Land, Family & Tribe so most don't want to leave.
Then there is the reality that if they moved to the "Real World" even with the course & so on the prospects of getting a job aren't high, there is just to much competition.

Been there, done that.
Maybe it even worked a little?
They covered the work ute in pink fluro paint, didn't touch my D3.
Although we are pretty strict with the kids when they come in to shop (no kids during school hours, no running, no shouting, so on) if they are a few cents short for an ice cream or something we just pay the difference out of a little "Slush Fund" we have, if the fund gets low I chuck a few bucks in to keep it going.
We also sponsor a lot of prizes & drinks for school, sports, trips & that sort of thing.
As far as flogging them goes............. Bloody tempting! But I would probably get speared or something.
I first came to Doomadgee in 1993 ( have had a couple of periods elsewhere since) and it is a hell of a better place than it was back then in most ways. SWMBO & I have been well accepted over the years but what the ultimate answers are to the on going social, justice, poverty, drinking, drug, education & health problems are I just don't know?
I have some ideas but people want short term fixes & there is no such thing, it's generational. It will take a lot of time & actual effort, not just money.
Anyway, I'll shut up now before I become all political.

BTW Doomadgee has only stocked Opal & Diesel fuel since 2003.
when I was in Broome and duty manager at the backpackers I had to deal with a gang of 10 aboriginal kids the were continuously borrowing the hire bikes. My solution was, one night I was too quick for them and they left their bikes there and decided to run. I caught up with them and told them if they wanted their bikes back they needed to come and talk to me. Of the ten, nine come back, Had a chat to them and as I had already told them I called the cops.
The coppers come and took them home (2 am). Three days later they come to get their bikes back. So I rung the coppers and had a chat with them. Had a talk to the kids and asked them if you would do a job for me, the job was to protect the hire bikes.
Never lost another bike and they would bring me random bikes that had been borrowed from elsewhere. Used to give them the odd can of coke and always had a bottle of water for them.
I never promised them any thing I personally couldn't do, treated them with respect and they in tern did the same. Had many a chat with them over the 12 months I worked there. These kids were between 5 and 14.
cheers
