...the much maligned desalination plants may show their worth in the next few years.

The ocean is an abundant supply and it would be very interesting scientifically although extremely costly if we were able to meet some of the already known ocean rising by using the oceans for domestic purposes.

A lot of money will have to be invested but it will happen as water becomes the worlds most in demand commodity.

Yes, I've read about the theory of 'peak water' but I have no idea if its true or not.
Desalination is very expensive. Be better to have every building store its own water, I think.

It's not so much that it is expensive, it's more that it uses lots of energy.
They can't just put another solar panel up or install another wind generator. It uses way more power than that.

Add to that, as the population increases, they're not going to be wanting just water. They'll be wanting energy in the form of gas, electricity and liquid fuels.

    ....
I can't see how that could possibly work - almost all the water used for domestic purposes is returned quite quickly to the oceans.

I don't know really, I saw a proposition once for solar distillation which seemed fairly feasible.

We are doing it for power generation , why not salt water distillation.

Everything we try to achieve for our future has an ugly head , mostly cost , but I'm sure the more we use our natural resources for everything , the better we will be.
