Kookaburras first there was 1, now there's 12

We have a family of magpies that come for a free feed of mince meat in the morning and evening. We don't mind their presence as they are territorial and keep the imported pesty Indian Mynas away.
A few months ago when Heather opened the back door to go out side a small Kookaburra landed on her, so we gave it some mince meat, it comes sometimes and we put out our arm, it lands and we give it a treat. I think it's an orphan as Kookas live in family groups.
The magpies however aren't too friendly to Kooka and often there is a bit of a ultercation. Also the magpies nest about 500 metres away, but have an eye out on our back yard and will come from no where if there is an intruder.
Then a few weeks ago, we ended up with a family of 6 other kookaburras arrive, we gave them a few scraps of mince meat and they come every now and then when passing the neighborhood.
Well this morning we look out side and there are 12 kookaburras!
It's becoming like Alfred Hitchcock's movie " The birds!.
We don't feed them too much other wise they will take the easy way out and become dependent on us and won't forage and hunt for them selves.
At least I'll have no snake problems or pesty Sparrows and Indian Mynas!

I have had to stop feeding the Kookas as they become so aggressive that they have taken meat off my plate on two occasions.

Its no fun eating a barbeque outside when you feel the presence of a dozen sets of eyes just waiting for a moment's inattention and have to hold onto barbeque tongs to whack them as they swoop..

I stopped feeding them about a month ago and still this morning one came down and started bleating to me.
    Regards Philip A

You might have to get yourselves a pet Raven. Teach it to talk and tell the others to wrack off when it's not their turn.
    Cheers, Billy.

Hard not to feed the feathered friends. We had a couple of Ducks appear from nowhere about a month ago. Day 2 - there were 3 and we thought , oh how sweet. Day 3 = 11. And they were using our front doorstep as a public lavatory. Now, we don't feed them.
    cheers,

One thing though,be careful feeding anything mince,as it usually has preservatives in it.Same as sausages.

We put the old bird seed from our pet Conure out for the local birds.

We started off with two Paleheaded Rosellas, then we ended up with six, four of them were their chicks.

The King parrots come occasionally as well, but the difficult thing is keeping flocks of rainbow lorikeets away.

Strange you should say about the butcher bird, we have a one come in with the kookas, for the last couple of days we do not usually see them here. Wonder if they follow the kookas around.

My wife feeds the local maggies too, then the kookas worked it out. They seem to get on OK, they go their separate ways after breakfast. No food at any other time of day so they leave us alone. Her vet told her to use dog food as a substitute for mince only. A handful of dried dog food pellets in a bowl, soaked in boiling water for 5 minutes, drained and served by scattering. There's never any left over so they're not being over fed. I must take a picture one day, it's quite the zoo.
