Reviving an old thread.
So on Friday, just on dusk, there is a Tawney Frogmouth sitting on the rail of our balcony.
In 20 yrs in this area,i have only ever seen a couple around.
So SWMBO goes outside and it wanders along the railing and comes right over to her.It looks full grown but very fluffy, and it opened its beak for food.
All a bit weird.
We gave it a couple of pieces of meat, which it ate quickly.
Next morning its in a tree, about 2.5m from the ground.
As soon as it sees us it flies over.
We have a few huge golden Orb spiders around,i fed it a couple, which it ate quickly.Seems to like them.
After talking to a carer that specialises in Frogmouths,i got some small frozen, and expensive, mice from the pet shop. She said baby quails are also good for them.
It loves them. The carer said it has probably been someones pet,and it has escaped or they have let it go.
She said one mouse in the morning, one at dusk, and see how it goes.
Hopefully it starts to find its own food.
Its back on the deck railing again this arvo, waiting for a mouse.Been sitting in a tree near the deck all day,not sleeping all the time, just staying still, preening itself, and watching us and other birds.
Those of you that have had them, what did you feed them, and quantity?
We really want it to eventually source its own food, and fly off.
