This thread reminds me of when I worked years ago with seismic shothole drillers. The mud pumps were equipped with a safety valve that operated by shearing a specified diameter nail. The drillers had learnt from experience, that you no longer had to bother about replacing the shear pin if you replaced it with an equivalent size allen key......

Ah brings back memeories of a day in Kuala Lumpur.
I was driving into the yard one day when this extraordinary mellee was occurring.
I had complained to Mr Loh the Embassy contractor that my fuses were blowing.
Mr Loh sent his untrained electrician who had a light bulb with two bits of wire. He couldn't find the fault so Mr Loh sent an actual electrician who placed a nail in the fuse holder. They had called a linesman from the Electricity department as they thought it was a fault on the wires outside.
As I drove into the yard Mr Loh's men were arguing loudly with the Electricity bloke who of course wanted a bribe to shut up about the nail.
Just then the maid came running out of the house screaming "The fridge has exploded"as indeed it had.
Silence suddenly overtook everyone as we got out of the car, and Mr Loh's electrician went inside to report that the fan in the freezer had fused. This was the problem all along. Cue workmen melting away ASAP. I don't know if a bribe was paid.
