i dont know what tas has in mind but what about passengers wanting to use their phone?
Wonder how the yuppies who cant seem too exist without a mobile in their hand will get on if Tasmania go,s ahead with their mobile cancelling system in cars as part of their road safety campaign .
I think its a brilliant idea (should be the same in public transport) but some people will scream the house down I suppose , the "what if" debate will make for good reading .

Pie in the sky idea generation from a safety committee without much consideration of the technical issues. Makes a good headline though.
Blocking phone signals in cars suggested as option to reduce Tasmanian road toll - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
If mobile phones contribute to the road toll in a significant manner then why has the road toll not spiked since the introduction of smartphones. It's not like there isn't the ability for police to fine drivers distracted by mobiles in most states already.....

A 2013 review of Australian crash statistics ( Driver inattention and driver distraction in serious casualty crashes: Data from the Australian National Crash In-depth Study) The use of mobile phones is implicated in about 1% of road crashes http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_
Does that mean that one in every one hundred deaths was related to phone use, I don't know! But you would be pretty angry if one of your relatives died because a driver was using their phone.

the article does not say how it works.
interesting that exceeding the speed limit makes up only 13% of crashes.

Why would we allow any more reductions in our personal freedoms for spurious reasons?
Big Brother is already too nosy, I reckon. Next thing Big Brother will be telling us what to say in bed.

No angrier than if they were killed because the driver of another vehicle was under the influence of drugs or were killed by an unsecured excavator bucket hitting them. My point being that 1% of accidents seems to be a small percentage of the total to spend so much effort on a technical solution that at best would be difficult to implement.

Agree, and 1% is a very small statistic, but when the national road toll is now around 1,000 making more improvements means greater impositions. All the easy fixes seem to have been made already.
Perhaps, all vehicles need to be fitted with drug/alcohol immobiliser devices, before mobile phone defeat devices. I do however wonder why we have BAC legislation and not Blood Drug Concentration legislation?

Because all drugs are bad mkay... so the pollies can get away with a zero tolerance policy that if they detect drugs then you must be impaired.
Don't know what that means for the ADHD driver with prescribed Ritalin who gets pulled up at a random drug testing station though....
