I have been behind brand new patrols being driven from the port to storage yards and the layed down smoke like a destroyer. My brother in law told me years ago that diesel cars will eventually die a death as there is now way (for now) that they will continue to meet ever stricken emission laws. Funnily enough he bought a golf based on Vw's emission claims...:o
nearly got a patrol once.
ive never been able put my finger on what made them so popular.

And pretty damm strong,my BIL had a head on in his,with another GU the same year,build dates were two months apart.
Both vehicles were written off,as was the large twin axle van,no real injuries,all four people involved were very lucky.
looking around SA, the 3.0's are the only ones for sale. the 4.2, 4.5, 4.8 is rare to see around.Quote:

The GQ and GU utes sold well because they supplied a better standard of trim than the Hiluxes and Landcruiser 70 series of the time. As an indication of how old the platform is though I was looking at a GU wagon when I bought my D2 new in about 2003. The Canberra dealer told me then that the 4.2 diesel was only available to government gustomers so I went and bought the D2 instead....
I did a lot of miles around the NSW back country in a GU (Maverick) for work many years ago and over the course of 260,000KM the only things that needed fixing outside of regular maintainence were the radiator which got a pinhole and the floor under the accelerator which cracked.
