Good points.

Good idea, but the main reason for the electronic form is to save $$$ on data entry. I have colleagues who do survey based research and their main cost is converting paper surveys to electronic.
Plus the 30 mins completion time would mean they would need to keep the booths open for 2 days to get everyone through...
Good points.

Well, I just logged in and completed the Census, having decided to swallow my objections to its compulsory nature. I did say I did not agree to the release of my information to the public after 99 years.
However, there was a problem with my responses. We had two Chinese students staying in our house on Tuesday night. They are now in China. Therefore I was not able to gain their approval to give their names in the Census. I was not going to give the names of two 13 year old visiting boys to the ABS.
The census would not allow me to leave the name boxes empty. Therefore, there are now persons named XXXX and XXXXX in he census records.
Privacy has to mean something.
In the feedback box I asked them what people were supposed to do if people in their household refused permission for their names to be given in the census.
Maybe someone somewhere will eventually take that question seriously. Or not, more likely, judging from the recent performance of the ABS.
Its a total debacle and heads should roll, I think, as the PM said.
just filled it out......didn't bother me that it was taken down due to ******* trying to hack it, showed they were prepare to put security before everything else......**** my head would have rolled 100 times due to things not going quite right in my job, we are only human after all.
the kids wanted pets included, so we added that to the feedback.........our support for future census's to be online

The technical evidence shows that the problem was not someone trying to hack it, but simply that the capacity provided did not equal the capacity required - so everyone trying to log on looked like an attack. They expected something like six million to do it on line, and the ads urged everyone to do it on Tuesday. Their capacity was a million an hour. Should be good? Right! Except that probably three quarters of those trying to do it on line in the eastern states time zone all tried to log on after finishing dinner on Tuesday evening (exactly as the ads told them to).
Several million trying to log on in a half hour period is not going to work at a capacity of a million an hour. To the operators, it looked like an attack, and when the IBM systems started sending an error log to head office, the operators panicked and thought it was a hacker, and shut everything down.

AFAIR from the extensive ABS training documents foreign visitors are not included in the census anyway. We had two Chinese students staying in our house on Tuesday night. They are now in China. Therefore I was not able to gain their approval to give their names in the Census.

Finally got on and did mine last night. Took about 7 mins. Easy peasy.
Cheers Rod
