In theory the 300 M plus 'investment' should deliver information that leads to savings and prosperity in the medium to longer term.
Has it in the past? Is it actually a good investment or is it just being done because 'that's what we do'?

Interesting reading and comments.
I got a paper form well before the date and I filled it sat on the banks of a creek in the bush, somewhere out west.
There is very little they couldn't get form other sources, but as I think I said earlier, due to data protection and law, I expect that they cant get that information from all those sources, so they have another process to get that information.
I did a paper form so all I know about the internet based option is what I have read here.
I have done a few online serveys and I think it is Survey Monkey that is pretty simple.
It wouldnt be hard for the the ABS to give a list of questions to Google, and the method to do it - with the log in number and contract Google to do the survey - with out the google branding.
I have never had google fail on me or crash, and I am quite sure it would be easy for Google to do this, with the security, put all the results in to a spread sheet and e-mail it to the ABS (ok, so the spreadsheet and e-mail are a bit simple) but really that is about it.
Go to the world leading industries to get the job done. The ABS are the experts in creating the questions and processing the data, go to the experts in obtaining the data.
Simples
Savings for who? The Defence force? The mining industry? Centrelink? ...forgive my cynicism, but government savings are all political, not needs based. I give my info to the ABS in the hope that genuine researchers like the Grattan Institute can make a difference.
The crazy thing is that the gov would already have most of that info anyway through banking, tax returns, and other online activity. Census these days is just cross referencing I reckon.
How about we stop the political chit chat right now please?
This thread is running along very well and doesn't need closing now because a couple of people make it political.
Thanks for your cooperation.
We have next to our block a large easement, about the size of a house block. It is for drainage. At the time of the census we received not one but two too fill out. One for our residence and one for the easement. :) I oh so dearly wanted to fill out that one and send it back. :p We are number four and the block is listed by them as the number four secondary residence. This is supported by the council street plan having the easement as 4A. So we just put the extra one to one side. Now we get a reminder to fill it out. So the boss has fired of a email letting them know of there error.

Your field officer can cancel it on the first follow up, by indicating the house doesn't exist.Quote:

The data has many uses. For example, the federal government gives grants to state and local governments based on census data about population. Does a place need a school or an upgraded hospital or a better road or a library or a sports field? Which place has the greatest need? Check the population based on the census.

I may be totally wrong and will stand adjusted if I am wrong.Quote:

The census was posted to us as in no human interaction between us and the census mob. No field officers involved at that point. They where expecting all most all to be done on line even though one of the questions was do you have internet. Those, like us that did it the old fashioned way are expected to mail it back with the envelope provided as we did with our copy. So I`m a guessing it will be a long time waiting for any field officers to show up. :) We will post the extra one back eventually.

No a list of "non responders" will be given to a field officer for your area.
42A should be on that list although your house should not be if your response has been received.
When they get to 42A and there is no dwelling there a question comes up. "is this a valid dwelling?" A no answer ask why eg vacant lot etc.

I was a non responder until day ago due to not being able to complete census online. Then I received a reminder in the mail! They're onto it. I got back online and all went through this time. Took me three goes though! ...imagine if the online system had been used for Federal Election voting!! We would be going back to the polls.
