I don't think keeping it civil will be an issue, keeping it apolitical may be.
If capitalism is so great why do Governments need to contribute to the likes of tourism, the arts, sport etc. If the free market is such a great thing should these things be self funding. The only thing Governments should do is provide the essentials, Infrastructure, education, health etc. I do not want this to be political but more of a discussion about what is important. Yes a can of worms but I hope we can keep it civil.

If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
Tourism, the arts and sport are highly important in education, health and the economy. All are no less self funding than any other subsidised industry. Infact cultural tourism is the fastest growing industry in Australia.
How many bank bailouts do you need to see? Capitalism should be dead, but after the GFC, the banks were bailed out to the tune of billions. None of the above industry sectors receive bailouts like that!
Do you seriously think 'winner takes all' is a good philosophy for global health?
We are not slaves of capitalism but we are slaves of the failed notion of exponential growth

Winner takes all, or excessive welfare; opposite ends of the scale but (in my opinion) equally as destructive to society. Finding the balance point between them, now that is hard, as everyone has a different balance.
Alsom agree with roverrescue on growth, sometimes enough is quite sufficient.
Sports, Arts and Culture are actually vitally important to keeping a populous "happy".
Give them bread and Circuses.
Cheers, Billy.
Keeping it simple is complicated.
Yes I totally agree. It's the shades of grey in between that's the hard equilibrium to find. As we all have our own personal filters of what the best course to take, dictated by personal values or perspective. On the right you tend to get a polarisation of internal causation ie if you just apply yourself you will achieve whatever. On the left it's external causation so the social environment needs to be right or the right support for people to be happy or achieve..... And both are partly right.
